Gorgo

**** 1/2     Get Ready to Root for the Killer Monster!

After the success of Godzilla and other monsters of that sort, England tried to do the same. The made a "Godzilla-like" creature called a Gorgo (based of the Gorgon of Greek mythology), complete with a rubber monster suit. Just for fun, they through in an interesting plot twist…

Treasure divers find and capture a dinosaur-like sea creature from off the coast of Ireland. They bring it to London, and put it on display (of course). The thirty or so foot Gorgo (even though they say 65 in the movie. it is just an exaggeration to draw an audience.), turns out to be an infant, and the 200 or so foot mama comes! It trashes London and gets her baby back!

This one is a classic! The plot is great; the special effects are spectacular! The plot seems to at first be a rip-off of King Kong, but then the twist happens and it turns into something completely different! It is reminiscent of Mothra, but this one was made slightly before Mothra so the two aren't connected. It is a rip-off of some other movies, though, such as "King Kong", "Godzilla", and "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms", but it's more original than some other movies. The plot is good, showing to light the ruthless moneymaking side of humans in a realistic way. The plot flows together really well. But the plot isn't the real spectacular side of the movie. The special effects are the best of the genre. OK, so it's one of the last ones to be made, but it’s still good for the time. Sure, Gorgo would have looked better if it was made in stop-motion rather than Suitamation, but it's still rather convincing. Besides, it leaves more room for longer and better destruction scenes. It is one of the few Suitamtion movies to show realistic building destruction. Buildings don't explode like in Godzilla movies, they crumble! Stop motion wouldn't have shown that well. They design would have been better in stop motion, though, with differences in mother/child and a more realistic design. However, they design aint too shabby. The hands and feet are goofily large, but it makes sense, this thing's a swimmer and needs large flipper hands! More realistically than some movies I know of, though.

This movie is great. It has a few minor problems, but it's still great. It just barely missed the 5 star standard. Gorgo is a very recognizable monster, despite the fact it only had one movie. It didn't need a sequel, there is no need (but a remake would be good). This is a wonderful movie; I recommend it to anybody who likes giant monsters of any type. It is a true classic!
