Godzilla Raids Again
(Gigantis, the Fire Monster)

***
He’s Back! After the success of the original Godzilla, they dicided to make another one. Like King Kong, another one won’t be made for a long time, until King Kong vs. Godzilla comes out. Although not as good as the original, it aint that bad.
A year after the original attack by Godzilla, a couple of other monsters, Gigantis(Godzilla #2) and Anguiras, appear and start beating each other up. They make their way to Tokyo, and wouldn’t you know it, the only thing that can stop them is the Oxygen Destroyer, and that has been, well, destroyed. Gigantis appears first, and is lured away by flares, cause it is attracted by light. Through a very odd looking backplot involving prisoners, Osaka catches on fire and it attracts both monsters to it. They continue to fight, destroying Osaka along the way. Anguiras is "killed", and Gigantis walks away. He appears weeks later, and through a Kamikaze’s idea, they trap Gigantis under a pile of ice cubes.
Unlike the first one, this one isn’t as cheap looking. They must have got more money, cause it has much better special effects(except the ice cubes). The plot is pretty good, not as good as the original, but still good. It tells a tale of a bunch of fisherman, which is good because those are the type of people who always get attacked first by Godzilla. The story is told through first person narration, like the first one, which is what I like. The story gets a little weird at times, but its withstandable. The movie runs on a bit of a "double movie" effect, because after the climax with the monster fight it slows down only to speed up again to anouther climax. This may be good or bad, depending on your taste. The plot itself is a little mixed up, with it going fast and then suddenly slowing down. Not to bad of a plot, though.
This movie is all about explanation. It starts out with a nifty segment about human development. Later on it explains Godzilla’s origin. Apparently, Godzilla and most of the other monster(Anguiras, Rodan) are so called "Fire Monsters". They are dinosaur-like creatures that were born from fire. They have irregular genetic patterns, and are extremely huge. Most died off when the dinasaurs did, but some could go into suspended animation. They were woken up again by nuclear bomb testing or some other means of disturbing. This movie is pretty darn good, because it explains so much.
This movie has it’s problems, though. The special effects aren’t that great, even haven some parts were it speeds up dramatically. The main monster fight in the movie is obviously the first fight in a godzilla movie. It runs on a very animal-like feel, which reminds me of other old monster movies, mainly ones involving a couple of iguanas with fins taped on their backs! The plot has certain parts that are lame, weird, or full of holes. The movie trys to keep the somber feel of the original, but fails half the time. Somehow a city being destroyed by two fighting monsters just isn’t as dramatic as one single monster. Godzilla isn’t called that, it’s Gigantis in the American form, which is annoying. Even more annoying is the fact that Godzilla’s roar is replaced by Anguiras’s most of the time. I’m not sure why that is like that, but it’s annoying. All in all though, not to shabby. A must have.
