The Morning After

Another brief little piece written when Valtameri first became involved with Penthus. Was never posted, finished, or much of anything else.

Valtameri sat before the mirror, her back facing the shining glass and her body twisted to study the red wound creasing her lower back. It began in the center of the right side, ran over her spine, across her left side and trailed off over the top of her hip. She had ripped it open again and a fresh coat of maroon blood was dried over the deep gash. More smudges of the dark liquid stained her pale skin around the cut, making the smooth stretch of lily from the curve of her buttocks to her mid-back seem a lovely brush of claret and burgundy, the shades flowing together like melted rose petals on snow. She shook her head, untwisting herself to gaze across the room.

Should have gotten that stitched up...she thought, her eyes settling gently on Penthus. He lay on the thick carpet, his chest rising and falling steadily as he slept, worn out from their earlier activities. A patch of carpet beside him seemed darker than it should have; maroon like her cut instead of the deep pink the rest of the room was. A bloodstain, the same as those blooming on her back. Maybe she just shouldn’t have pulled him on top of her...carpet, after all, was not the most forgiving fabric to press a wound into repeatedly. Not that she had minded at the time; she had hardly noticed what with the other activities occupying her mind.

She stood up slowly, attempting to not put any further strain on the injury. Despite the aesthetically pleasing designs it could make with her blood, it was truly becoming an irritation. She was not used to having to be so watchful of her own body. Mayhap she could just find a healer for it...

Her bare feet padded across the plush flooring, silent as she stepped over discarded pieces of clothing and halted beside the slumbering elf.
