The Silhouette

I wake
and wipe the sleep from my eyes
Through blurred vision I see your silhouette
standing in the open balcony doorway,
soft tufts of hair bouncing in the breeze
Morning sunlight
touches just the outline
of your naked form
casting larger than life shadows
on the bedroom floor

I stretch and rise,
sitting tall in my bed,
feeling the gentle morning breeze caress my face
while songbirds sing their morning serenade
Your scent intoxicates my senses,
sending my soul reeling with desire

I need you to hold me close,
feeling your touch one last time
I long to hear your voice
calling out my name
as you wrap me in your arms
close to the beating of your heart

I step from my bed,
turning to face the world,
anticipating the delight
of another glimpse of you
But the doorway stands vacant,
curtains blowing soft and free in the breeze
My heart feels empty
Loneliness fills my soul

Anger rises deep within me
at God's hand of death
for stealing you away
in such untimely fashion;
tricking me with these shadows,
these illusions of you,
only to cast them away
without warning,
leaving me to hold only memories
gathered long before we were forced to part
Lost forever
...except within my heart.
