What Is Witchcraft?

Here are the answers to some common questions regarding witchcraft.I have decided not to spend a huge deal of time going over what Witchcraft is simply because there are so many good (as well as bad) sites where you can find answers for all your burning questions. I will however; correct some of the more common misconceptions regarding Witch Craft on this page.

I have linked a few pages that I believe are accurate- and very helpful- that will give you a more in-depth look at Wicca, witchcraft and pagan spirituality at the bottom of this page. I have also included a reading list (Our fave authors) in case you may want to do some off-line research. Please feel free to Email us with any specific questions! We would love to answer them for you.

Let’s begin with the subject of stereotypes. I think the best way I can approach the question "what is Wicca? ( I will be using the term Wicca throughout this page as umbrella term) is to start by saying what it isn't. Wiccans are not Satanist.

In fact, we do not validate the Christian concepts of Satan, Hell, Sin, etc. What we do, is to strive for personal responsibility for what we send into the Universe. We believe that whatever we send out to the world, whether intentional, (like through Magick) or unintentional (like through insensitivity) will come back to us in three. This applies to both negative and positive energies. To claim that one has "sinned", and must "repent", takes a way some of the responsibility, and almost excuses one, as if one did not make a conscious decision to commit the act in the first place. So the old adage "what goes around comes around" is applied in our daily living.

We are not a cult We do not go out and recruit people to become Wiccan or Pagan. We do not hand out pamphlets or try to convert people. We will gladly answer questions regarding Wicca when asked. I think the only thing that really annoys me, is when people who aren't knowledgeable regarding the old religion attempt to "Save” me. I find this very insulting because it suggests that they are closer to the divine than I am. I dislike being told that someone is "praying" for me also, unless of course they do so out of sincerity, and not self-righteously. I guess to sum it up, I will say that There are many paths to the Divine, and each on earth should be allowed to walk his/hers in peace!

We do not sacrifice anything! In fact,, it is against the main tenet of Wicca to harm anyone or thing, including ourselves! We are lovers of the universe and feel that nature is divine in it's self. Many Wiccans are animal lovers who have many pets. Some of these pets are looked upon as "familiars--or friendly aids in our magickal lives. But mostly we just love critters and like having lots of them around us!

Many Wiccans are ecologist and environmentalists who are the care-takers of Mother Earth. We value all living things on this earth, realizing that "all things are equally important"-- from an ant to Grandma etc. We feel this way because we believe that nature is perfect in her design and that we are all an intricate part of the plan.

The Pentacles we wear are not the sign of the devil.

Each point on the star represents an element: air, earth, water, fire, and spirit. In some Wiccan traditions, the inverted (upside down) pentagram is a symbol of The Horned God, the Goddess's Consort, or to symbolize a second-degree ranking. (See the Traditions page). There are some people who use the inverted pentagram to symbolize Satanism, but they are in no way representing the Wiccan Community. Not to knock Satanists, I know a few myself, but I too had to get over my ignorance of their religion, and get past the misconceptions to find out they were nice folks ;-) I had confused Satanists with Devil Worshippers at one point and was promptly set straight!

Magick Yes we work Magick. (See the Spells page) But no, we do not fly, can't change our hair color by will, and I have never seen a witch turn in anyone into a toad. These things are Hollywood. There is some reference to psychotropic drugs (In the form of moldy bread etc--see the History page-- being at the forefront of the "flying witch" myth, but I won't get into that now. We use magick to empower our lives, to help us achieve our goals, and to keep our hearths and persons safe, adjusted etc. It is against our Rede (See the Tenets Page) to use magick to deliberately altar ones free will: as in doing a love spell. For example, it is perfectly acceptable ( in many traditions) to send out a request to the universe to bring you true love. However, it would be unwise to see a specific person that you want and then ask the universe to make that person love you. Magick is a very Real! One should be a seasoned Witch or practitioner before dabbling in serious magick of any kind. There are beginners spells that can help you hone your craft without wreaking havoc on the universe. It is also imperative to know that Magick is NOT the foundation of witchraft. It is only one aspect of the Religion in which we seek to attune ourselves with the natural rhythms of the universe through our devotion to and love of the God/dess.

Well that concludes my little what we aren't series*When I say "We" I am referring to all the people who practice Wicca in various forms and traditions do. There are of course, people, who will have differing opinions, and that is fine. “There are many pathways in Wicca and Witchcraft. See each member’s individual pages for their specific traditions and practices. The above statement are blanket statements are in no way meant to be the final authority of this subject. Please continue through our worlds. Stop by home and sign the guest book if you are so inclined. We appreciate your comments!!

As Wicca is becoming more "main stream," many public libraries are building extensive lists, so don't forget where your local library is!
