Newton's Third Law of Motion- For Every Action

disclaimer: ::sigh:: If only they were mine... but they're not. I've accepted this and moved on. I can claim Emilia for my own. Take what you can get. The concept/setting doesn't belong to me, either. The plot is mine. The story is mine. But other than that, this is all Ms. Rowlings.

warnings: Still Mary Sue/quasi Mary Sue. So once again, if you don't like it, don't read it.

For Every Action

That damnable trio had finally left Hogwarts. The Dark Lord was gone. This year would have to, by default, be the best year of his life since before he'd graduated Hogwarts himself. Perhaps he'd even finally be given the seemingly cursed Defense Against the Dark Arts position. Well, there was nothing wrong with dreaming now...

Severus Snape was not a man known to allow his emotions to show in any way that made him vulnerable.
This said had it been anyone but Dumbledore whose presence he had made such a display in they would have been disturbed. As it is stands, though, there was only the faint twinkle in his eye to betray that anything at all was out of the ordinary as his Potions Master stormed around his office.
"Every year! Every year the position is open... Why, Albus?"
And there was that damnable twinkle. "You know I have my reasons."
"Yes, reasons you never seem to deign to share with me."
And at this he actually crinkled his eyes ever so slightly. "Sit down and finish your tea, Severus."
He glared at the innocent cup. "It's cold by now. I'm going."
"I'll see you at the feast then?"
His only reply was the slamming of the door.
But even Dumbledore can only be amused for so long...

Severus' agitation only increased as the beginning of term grew nearer. And so did his frustration at Dumbledore's continued refusal to answer any of his questions. So he had finally given up and retreated to his room, office, and chambers until the first of September. But after reading what felt like his entire library and recataloguing almost all of the potions ingredients in both his and the school's stores he had to admit that he was just too impatient to wait any longer.

"Severus, when I told you I couldn't explain I meant I couldn't explain. Come now, the feast is tomorrow, you'll know then."
"I shouldn't have to wait, Albus. All the other Professors know. Why should I be the exception?"
"A dear friend of mine has had several unfortunate occurrences recently. The position was offered and accepted. I do try to help those I care about, Severus, as you are well aware, and at this point a change was needed. The roots that had been planted needed to be unearthed as the trunk had died."
"'A dear friend?' 'Roots?' Albus, I'm tired of this evasion. Why do you insist on playing games with me? Who is it that has taken the position from me for the hundredth time?"
"You'll understand tomorrow, Severus. Now, if you don't mind, I have a lot to get ready by tomorrow."
"Fine."

The next day passed far too slowly. Finally it was time for the feast, and Severus put down the book he'd been attempting to read and made his way to the Great Hall. He arrived moments before the returning students, although he saw no one occupying the Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor's seat. The first years entered and were sorted, complete with his applause for the new Slytherins, and still nothing.
Then, at the end of Dumbledore's announcements but right before he could summon the food, the door of the Great Hall opened and a woman walked towards the head table.
"Ah! I am pleased to introduce the new Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor, Mrs. Emilia Vaughn, from the Salem School of Sorcery."
