Greek Architects


Ictinus

 Ictinus, also spelled Iktinos, along with Callicrates built the Parthenon upon the Acropolis in Athens. Though he was a real architect unlike Callicrates, he constructed the Parthenon. According to Plutarch, Ictinus worked on other buildings and temples during the ancien era. These include the Temple of Apollo(at Bessai) and Telestrion’s Hall at Eleusis. He rebuilt and enlarged the Hall in the Temple of Demeter and Persephone. He worked at Eleusis sometime after the completion of the Parthenon.

Callicrates

  Callicrates, also spelled Kallikrates, helped with the construction of the Parthenon. Even though he acted more of a contractor, he still helped to raise many structures in Greece. He was responsible for the Temple of Athena Nike: Acropolis in Athens (420 BC.), Temple of Artemis (449 BC.), Temple of Apollo (417 BC.), and the Long Walls (446 BC., rebuilt in 393 BC.). For all his works, he was more concerned with the technical and managerial aspects than formal designs.

Phidias

  Phidias, also spelled Peidias, was the supervisor of the arts for the construction of the Parthenon. He was put in charge by Pericles to help with the artwork in the initiation of the great construction. He also made the three monument to the goddess Athena. He was also responsible for the Zeus monument which stands about 38 feet high. He basically created the iamges of Athena and Zeus. Later in his life, he gets accused from stealing gold to impiety to Preicles. Then he is later exiled when some beleived that he died in Prison.
