What A Bum

Walking down Forbes Avenue at the fall of the sun used to be one of my favorite activities. It’s got a great glow to it and I just know I won't get mugged (at least not at that time of day). One of the things I enjoy about Forbes is meeting people on the street. These people are the ones I see everyday. They're friendly and charming, although at times a bit intimidating...they are bums.

Last week, as I was sauntering down Forbes, I had a lot on my mind. I was half depressed and couldn't concentrate on anything but why my life at that point was sooooo horrible and why certain people couldn't respect me more. Me me me, me me me, blah blah blah, help me me, me me me, blah blah pee, dee dee dee, la la la.....

As I walked past Subway, I saw one of the bums. He was different today. He had a push wheelie (you know, the ones that old folks use to walk around) and was sitting on the windowsill. His face was hopeless and had but a few pennies and dimes in his Styrofoam cup. I looked him in the eye and said "good evening" and he looked up at me, forced a smile, and returned my reply.

I was flushed.

'oh my..........'

I missed it......I totally missed it.

Have you ever thought about what's really important in life? I mean, really important...think big....not of yourself, like I was. What's really important in life is loving others and not always focusing on you.

Take me for example. I was so deeply in thought and involved in my own life that I failed to see that bum who needed more than a 'good evening.' I think at that time, God was tapping me on the shoulder and reminding me it's not all about me, but Him and His people. There are more important things in life then to mope around and weep for oneself. God was telling me to get my head on, and stop complaining.

Therefore, meet some bums, they're great.
