"So your telling me that Im adopted and that my parents, aren't really my parents?" I asked Diana as we sat in Taylor's living room.
Isaac, Zac and Natalie (much to her dismay) had all taken the younger kids outside to play. I had asked Taylor to stay with me for moral support and Diana was doing most of the talking.
I was total shocked by what she was saying but I had no reason to think she would be lying.
"Yes. Gary and Lydia Thomas, came to town when you were just a baby and our church members kindly took you in. Lydia and I grew to be good friends and one day she confided in me that you were adopted. They had gotten you from an orphanage in North Carolina so we think your biological parents may have been from there." She explained as Taylor and I looked on in awe. I tried to take it all in, but I was still in shock.
"So, she's not really Kaitlin Thomas?" Taylor asked in utter disbelief. I could tell that this was hard to believe, but thankfully he had kept my secret from the night before. He was always good at keeping secrets.
"Well yes. She probably was born under another name, but Lydia said that they liked Kaitlin for you best. Im so sorry honey," Diana rubbed my back, trying to comfort me.
----
"What can they be talking about in there?" Natalie asked from her seat on the back porch steps. I was sitting beside her and Zac was running around with the Mac and Jessi.
"Who knows. She's been up Taylor's butt ever since you guys got here. I even think Zac may like her," I replied and she looked at me and laughed.
"Zac, like Kaitlin? Yeah right. She just better not try to put the moves on Tay cause he already taken," She said with a smile. I suddenly caught myself staring at her, she really was pretty and Tay made a good catch. (Or maybe it's the other way around.) I looked away just as she looked at me.
"Isaac? Can I ask you something?"
"Sure,"
"Do you think he really loves me? I mean, when your parents thought I was pregnant he got in trouble. Even though it wasn't true, he kinda avoided me for a while there. He didn't answer my calls or anything. Did he say anything to you?"
I was shocked by her topic of questions but realized that before they got married, he really didn't say much to me about it.
"Im sure he loves. Why else would he have married you? Tay's just weird about his feelings like that sometimes. He doesn't even tell me what he really feels. You just got to learn to pull it out of him. Talk to him casually and he'll open up."
"Good, cause I really love him. I don't know what I'd if anything came between us,"
"He'd be a fool to let you go," I said and she lightly blushed.
"Maybe I married the wrong brother," She whispered just as Zac came running up with Mac behind him. They ran up between us and Natalie almost feel off the step.
"Hey guys watch it," I said and Mac jumped on my back.
"I want a ride," He demanded and I stood up as he almost chocked me with his death grip around my neck.
"Arn't you a little big for this? You 7," I asked as I walked around the yard with him on my shoulders.
"Come on Ike. Show out for Natalie," He laughed as I looked back toward the steps. Zac was now in a deep conversation with Natalie about his drumsticks and Avery was braiding her hair.
"That's what Taylor's for," I replied and pulled him off my shoulders. "I can't do this Mac. Your to heavy."
"Or your just not strong enough," He retorted and ran back toward the apartment. I walked up just as Nat stood up.
"I think I'll go see what's taking so long. What ever their little discussion is about should be over with," She went into the apartment and I sat down beside Zac.
"You guys seem to have hit it off," He asked me as I watched the younger kids running around. Zoe was now being chased by Mac and Jess and Avery were doing each other's hair.
"Who, me and Nat?"
"Yeah. I saw how you were looking at her."
"Zac, that's sick! She's our sister-in-law and that's immoral."
"Well, Tay did a pretty good job. Cause she is pretty," Zac took the words right out of my mouth.
"She's not my type. Besides, I don't want to get settled down right now,"
"Just watch it okay? If I sense something, then you know Tay will," Zac said and went into the house. I was left the gather up the rest of the kids.
------
"Why didn't you tell me? I still don't get it," I asked Lydia as we drove toward the airport. We were going on a long trip to North Carolina to look for my biological parents.
Yes
I wanted to find them but I wanted Lydia's answers more.
"Kaitlin, honey we thought you wouldn't understand. It all was a big change for us and we wanted to get into good standings with the people here. Especially in the church, Diana and Walker took us in right away and I didn't want to mess that up. Especially since you got along so well with the kids.
I still can't believe that our little Taylor's married," She shook her head as I turned into the parking lot.
"I know but they seem very happy together and that's all that matter's right?"
"Well, don't tell him this. But Diana and I kinda picked you out for each other. You were like to of a kind, insepreble most of the time."
"Well I kinda wish he could have came with me, but they were flying out to L.A to work on the documentary. But I do have all of their cell numbers if I need anything and I promised to call as soon as I found anything." We made our way to the ticket counter and put our bags on the conveyer belt.
"Flight, 218 to Charlotte. Go to gate 114," The announcement came over the loud speaker and we followed the directions. Boarding the plane, I had regrets of my decision to search for my biological parents, but I knew it's what I had to do.
I just hope this whole trip is worth it.
