EARLY SPRING FISHING

Early Spring Basics

The black basses will also be actively relocating during March.
The largest black bass become active first.
These larger fish tend to suspend in tree tops and along the ends of bluff areas where they will take a suspending jerk bait.
The trick is to make a very slow presentation. Bites can be few and far apart.
Some very large black bass will be caught on the large Midwest reservoirs during the next three to 4 weeks,  probably the largest of the year.
Largemouth, spotted and smallmouth bass will feed actively on crayfish as water temperatures in the large area reservoirs warm through the low 5O's.
Fishing a Tournament one year I discovered that large bass will even feed in 45 plus degree water temp in the northern coves on a lake.
They will be most active along steep exposed chunk rock banks, especially on windy days.
Small crank baits that mimic crayfish and suspending Jerk baits are excellent choices. Anglers lucky enough to fish several days a week may notice that the black basses tend to move further into these cove areas in late March and as April approaches.(depending on weather conditions)
