Chapter 5

"He what?"

"He left me his number," Kaitlyn replied as she flopped down onto the couch.

"I should call him again."

"Why?"

"Tell him that you are my friend."

"Whatever," Kaitlyn replied rolling her eyes.

"Give me the phone."

"You’re seriously going to call him?"

"Uh huh," Kaylee replied grinning as she started to dial the numbers.

"Hello?"

"Nick?"

"Yeah."

"Hi."

"Who is this?"

"It’s Kaylee."

"Kaylee? Crazy chick?"

"Yeah."

"What do you want?"

"Well I just wanted to tell you that you gave my friend your number today."

"Huh?"

"Mexican restaurant Kaitlyn that’s my friend."

"Oh, seriously?"

"Duh!"

"You were right she is the complete opposite of you and I do like her. Is she there?"

"Uh huh, you want to talk to her?"

"Yeah."

Kaitlyn stared at Kaylee with wide eyes as she started shaking her head frantically.

Kaylee just laughed and threw the phone at her.

Kaitlyn groaned and looked at the phone.

"He’s waiting."

"No shit, I don’t want to talk to him."

Kaylee shrugged her shoulders as she stood up and walked out of the room.

"Hello?"

"Hi."

"Hi."

"Kaitlyn?"

"Yep that’s me."

"You’re friend is crazy."

"Tell me about it," Kaitlyn replied rolling her eyes.

Nick laughed and then stopped.

They both sat there in silence.

"So."

Kaitlyn looked around the room, "So?"

"You want to go out sometime?"

"Nah, that’s ok thanks for asking though."

Nick sat there confused and said, "Ok then."

Kaitlyn shook her head laughing.

"I have to go."

"Ok."

"Bye."

"Uh huh," Kaitlyn replied as she hung up the phone.

…:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::…

"So?" Kaylee asked as she ran out of the other room and back into the living room.

Kaitlyn looked up at Kaylee blankly. "So what?"

"When are you guys going out?"

"We’re not."

"Huh?"

"We. Are. Not. Going. Out," Kaitlyn said slowly.

"Why not?"

Kaitlyn shrugged as she stood up.

"I’m confused."

"So was he."

"He asked you out?"

"Uh huh."

"And you turned him down?"

"Yep."

"Are you insane?" Kaylee asked waving her arms all over the place.

"Whoa calm down psycho."

"What’s wrong with you?" Kaylee asked as she shook Kaitlyn by her shoulders.

"Uh, nothing?"

"Something has to be something," Kaylee replied as she started to walk around the room.

"Why?" Kaitlyn asked putting her hands on her hips.

"Because."

"Why?"

"Just because."

"Because I turned down Nick Carter?"

"Exactly, that’s why. You turned down Nick Carter."

"Oh well," Kaitlyn replied shrugging as she walked down the hall and into her bedroom.

Kaylee shook her head in disbelief before she flopped down on the couch sighing.

…:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::…

Did I miss something? Seriously, Kaylee is acting as if the world is going to end. What’s the big deal? Is it even that big of a deal? I think not.

So she needs to get her damn panties out of that huge ass wad and just get over it. Yep. Uh huh. Because I have other things in my life to worry about than going out with Nick Carter. Granted, I wouldn’t mind going out somewhere with him; I mean hello y’all have seen him I’m sure any girl in the right mind would want to, right? But just I don’t know… no need for it right now in my life. I already have so much shit on my plate why add more. Ya know?

It’s all so complicated. Relationships that is. I know I’m not the most experienced person when it comes to them but I’ve observed other relationships. They are complicated. Plain and simple. They require a lot of work as well. It’s just not really something I’m wanting now or… ever.

I remember watching my parents. How much they had to work at their relationship. I know that not everyone has to work at a relationship, some people just naturally click. But my parents weren’t that lucky. They loved each other deeply but just sometimes they didn’t get along. I don’t want to argue with someone about putting the damn toilet seat down or lecturing someone on how to put their dirty clothes in the dirty clothes hamper instead of on the floor right next to it. To me, that’s just petty things that you shouldn’t have to argue about. There are far better things in the world you could discuss than bills.

I know not all couples argue about those things. But it’s bound to happen; you’re going to end up arguing about something. It’s inevitable. And I’m studying to be a lawyer I’m going to be arguing with people everyday of my life, why would I want to come home and argue?

OK, I know I’m not really being fair. I’m acting as if no couple in America is happy. Truthfully, I don’t believe in fairy tales or happily ever after. Or a knight in shining armor coming to rescue me on his white horse. I do believe in love. But I don’t think love is all you need. There’s more to a relationship than that.

Like I said it’s complicated. I’m a simple person. I like my life. I like my routines. I like simple things. I don’t want to complicate things. Simplicity, that’s what I live for.

…:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::…

Nick sat on his couch with his arms folded across his chest and his feet propped on the table in front of the couch. He had a perplexed look on his face as he stared off into space.

Mike walked into the living room and just stood there looking at Nick wondering what the hell was going through his head. He looked around the room the TV was off and no one else was in the room. "Nick?"

"Yeah?" Nick replied looking over at Mike.

"Dude, what are you doing? I knocked on your door for almost ten minutes and finally I just walked in."

"That’s cool."

"What are you doing?"

"Thinking?"

"Thinking?" Mike asked almost shocked.

"Yeah," Nick replied nodding.

"About?"

"Nothing."

"Huh? You’re thinking about nothing?"

"I don’t feel like talking about it with you."

"Alright," Mike said defensively as he put his hands in the air.

"It’s confusing," Nick said looking around the room.

"Ok."

"Remember that crazy girl that called me?"

"Uh huh," Mike replied laughing so much for not wanting to talk about it.

"Dude, her friend is the chick from the restaurant."

"Ok."

"So she called me again to tell me that and then she put her friend Kaitlyn on the phone."

"And Kaitlyn was the waitress."

"Yeah."

"And?"

"I asked her out and she said and I quote, ‘Nah, that’s ok thanks for asking though.’ What the hell is that supposed to mean?"

Mike pressed his lips together and said, "She don’t want to go out with you?"

"No shit."

"Well you asked.

"I just don’t get it. Did she seem in to me at the restaurant?"

"I guess," Mike replied shrugging.

Nick sighed as he laid his head on the back of the couch.

"Dude, it’ll be alright. There’s plenty more fish in the sea. And don’t say she was different or you really liked her shit because you know it’s just shit too."

Nick looked over at Mike and opened his mouth to say something but then laid his head back down while Mike started laughing.

"She was cute though."

"No shit."

"You know you’ll find another girl tonight."

Nick just shrugged.

"Oh man here we go again," Mike replied rolling his eyes.

"What?"

"Every time a girl turns you down you get a nice swift kick in the ass and your damn ego is bruised so for the next couple of days you do everything you can think of for her to go out with you."

"I do not."

"You do too. Because you just can’t accept the fact that there are some girls out there that don’t want to get into your pants."

Nick cocked an eyebrow, "Really?"

Mike shook his head, "You’re an idiot."
