“Because they probably are,” Kaitlyn replied sighing as she sat down placing her napkin in her lap.
“Why?”
“Nick,” Kaitlyn said as she took a drink of the water that was already on the table.
“What about him?”
“He’s a Backstreet Boy now solo star or whatever he’s famous mom. Where have you been?”
Kaitlyn’s mom looked her wide eyed, “He’s famous? You picked up a famous boy? And he doesn’t even act it. Look it? Yes. But he’s kind of dorky acting.”
Kaitlyn sighed and said, “Yeah.”
“He’s cute though.”
“Mom.”
“What?”
“You’re a married woman.”
“That still has hormones and I may be married but my marriage is sexless.”
“Oh geez…” Kaitlyn replied rolling her eyes.
“He reminds me of Marvin my first love.”
“Marvin?”
“Shut up,” Her mom replied laughing.
“How come I’ve never heard anything about him until now?”
Her mom shrugged, “I don’t know it makes me sad to think about him.”
“What happened?”
“Well he was in this band they were amazing he played the guitar. I was so in love with him. But he indulged into the rockstar life a little too much. He ended up overdosing on something. I think if they would have stayed together they could have went far.”
“Interesting.”
“Miss me?” Nick asked as he kissed Kaitlyn’s cheek and then sat down across from her.
“Nope didn’t even know you left,” Kaitlyn replied sweetly.
“Oh Kaitlyn, no need to be a smart ass.”
“It’s ok Marie I’ve grown used to it,” Nick said winking at Kaitlyn.
“She gets it from her father.”
Nick nodded as he looked at the menu that was sitting in front of him.
“Have you talked to daddy?” Kaitlyn asked her mother as Nick looked up at the two of them.
“Yes, I talked to him before I left. He is in Minnesota. He’ll be home this weekend.”
“Good, someone needs to be with you.”
“Oh Kaitlyn stop it, you worry too much.”
“I have a right to worry about you.”
“No you don’t. I’m the mother you’re the daughter I worry about you, you don’t worry about me.”
“That’s stupid mom,” Kaitlyn replied rolling her eyes.
Nick looked at Kaitlyn and then at her mom wondering what they were talking about but deciding against asking.
“So Nick,” Kaitlyn’s mother started as Kaitlyn looked nervously between Nick and her mother.
“Yes?”
“Since Kaitlyn never tells me anything. Where did you two meet?”
Nick looked at Kaitlyn and smiled and then back at her mom, “We first met at a club, but I didn’t talk to her and then when I went out to eat with my friends she was our waitress. But she didn’t really act interested in me. My buddy was into her too, but he saw that I liked her and stepped back.”
Kaitlyn rolled her eyes as she put her elbow on the table leaning her head against her hand.
“I tried to talk to her but she was um…”
“Snobbish?” Her mother asked laughing.
“Yeah, then she came over to me asking for an autograph for a fellow waitress. And when we left I left her my number.”
“She didn’t call huh?”
“How did you know?” Nick asked laughing.
“It takes a lot for Kaitlyn to call a guy.”
Nick nodded and continued, “But Kaylee did call. Man, she is a trip. So we went to a club together and that didn’t go over all that well. Then we went out on a date that was disastrous and…”
“Then we went on another date and the rest is history,” Kaitlyn said smiling as she took a huge drink of her water.
“Yeah I guess that’s it.”
“He was very persistent.”
“You have to be with you dear,” Her mother said laughing.
Kaitlyn rolled her eyes as she looked at Nick, who was staring at her. She looked at him for a minute and then looked away feeling uncomfortable under his intense gaze.
“So when did you fall in love with her?”
Kaitlyn looked up quickly at her mom and then at Nick and started to say something but Nick beat her to it.
“There was this one night we were on the beach watching the sunset and she looked so incredibly beautiful I forgot how to breathe. As cliché as it may sound, it was the way the light breeze was blowing around strands of her hair and how she kept on putting them behind her ears. And the way she smiled up at me. Afterwards, we were walking back and I kissed her and there was just something there I guess.”
Kaitlyn’s mom and Kaitlyn both just stared at Nick.
“What?” He asked looking worriedly between the two of them.
“Nothing dear, that was very nice.” Kaitlyn’s mom said smiling.
Nick looked at Kaitlyn who continued to stare at him. He smiled at her and then looked up at the waitress who approached the table.
Chapter 26
“How come I feel like every single girl in this restaurant is staring at me?” Kaitlyn’s mom asked as they sat down at one of the back tables away from other people.
Ugh. How is it you can be so pissed at someone and then they say some of the simplest things but at the same time the sweetest things and all is forgotten? Bastard. I’m serious, I was so perfectly content with being pissed at him and then he said all that shit. Most of the time I would have just laughed and said he was being cheesy or something. Why didn’t I do that?
Because… come a little closer I’m going to tell you a secret. I might be feeling a tiny bit of something for him. Tiny bit. Itty bitty bit. Nothing too big you know. But I bet you get the point right? This boy has come into my world and just messed up my perfectly fine and order life. And… I just might like it. Like him. How can someone spend time with him and not develop some sort of feelings for him? Is that even possible? I mean what normal hot blooded hormonal female wouldn’t want to have him around? It’s a given that he is nice eye candy but that’s not all. He is so much more.
God listen to me. I sound like a cheesy romantic comedy or something. Ugh. Is this what my life has come to? He keeps smiling at me. He really needs to stop. That’s what it is. That damn million dollar smile. Now I know why girls pass out when they see him up close and when he’s smiling. It’s bad for one’s health.
I’m mad at him. I need to be mad at him. Psh… I hope I’m a good actress.
“Oh and there was this one time when Kaitlyn was I think maybe four. She decided she wanted to cut her hair. And her hair was so pretty when she was younger, it was long and blonde and curly. Now she dyes it and straightens it. Anyway, she cut her bangs all the way up to the top of her forehead, she didn’t have any. And they were all crooked and it looked horrible. We went to the salon every month for almost a year. Every time we went she could only cut so much to get them even again.”
“Mom, can we stop with the embarrassing stories?” Kaitlyn asked as she continued to pick at her food.
“I like hearing them,” Nick said grinning.
“I’m sure you do.”
“Kaitlyn just wait till you meet his parents, I’m sure they have a million embarrassing stories about Nick.”
Kaitlyn sighed as she took a bite of her food and then looked at Nick.
“Hm… let’s see I’m sure I can think of something else.”
“That’s ok Marie; I don’t want Kaitlyn to be embarrassed.”
“I’m fine continue I don’t care,” Kaitlyn replied as she sat back crossing her arms.
Kaitlyn’s mom looked over at her shaking her head and then stood up, “Excuse me I have to use the ladies room.”
Kaitlyn watched her mom get up and leave and then she looked back at Nick.
“What?”
“Nothing,” Kaitlyn replied as she took a sip of her wine.
“I like your mom she’s cool.”
“Eh… she’s alright.”
“That’s nice of you.”
Kaitlyn rolled her eyes and looked around the restaurant.
“What’s wrong?” Nick asked as he put his hand on her forearm that was resting on the table.
Kaitlyn looked down at his hand and then back up at him as she moved her arm, “Nothing.”
Nick looked at her a little longer and then looked away as her mother started to approach the table again.
“Ah, I feel better.”
Kaitlyn sighed and said, “Mom must you do that every time?”
“Kaitlyn I don’t know how you have gotten so uptight but it’s starting to bug me a little.”
Nick looked down as he started to laugh a little.
“I’m not uptight it’s just manners.”
“Oh psh.”
Kaitlyn shook her head and then stood up throwing her napkin on the table, “I’ll be back.” She said as she walked away from the table.
“She is uptight isn’t is?”
Nick looked up and continued to chuckle a little, “Yeah she can be.”
“I don’t know where she gets it seriously.”
“But it’s cool; she wouldn’t be who she is without that.”
“Very true.”
“And I might not have fallen for her either,” Nick said smiling.
