Chapter 1
Kaitlyn looked over at her friend, Kaylee, and sighed. “Kay I told you I can’t go I have shit to do.”
“You always have shit to do. You never want to go out and have fun.”
“I’m not paying thousands of dollars in tuition to go out and have fun.”
Kaylee rolled her eyes and walked out of the room. She loved Kaitlyn like a sister but she was always so wrapped up in school and then work she never wanted to let loose and have some fun. She needed to go out and have some kind of fun. Kaylee often wondered if fun was even in Kaitlyn’s vocabulary.
“Come on Kaitlyn you know you want to go out with me if you don’t who will I go with?”
I know what you’re thinking. I’m not some uptight school nerd. I just know what’s important. And to me going out and partying has never been high on my list of importance. I’m a junior in college, I’m 22 years old, and my priorities have changed. I’m studying to be a lawyer so I don’t have time for ‘fun’.
I’ve been on my own basically since I was sixteen. My parents are very old fashion. I had to get a job as soon as I was old enough; I was a waitress after school and then I babysat on the weekends. I had to buy my first car when all my friends were getting nice expensive cars for their sixteenth birthdays or for the hell of it.
When I graduated I moved to Florida to go to college, since it wasn’t all that far from where I grew up. My parents refused to help me through college, coming back to the old fashion thing they had to get jobs and work for everything they ever had so they raised me like that they said it would prepare me for the ‘real world’ that I’d be independent and responsible. And that’s what I am. I’ve never depended on anyone I’ve never needed anyone. I’m pretty sure I can do it all on my own.
“Make a deal with me.”
“Kaylee I’m not going anywhere.”
“Come on, you need to get laid. You need a boyfriend. You need to get out of this apartment and get out of those damn pajamas.”
“No I don’t.”
Kaylee got done on her knees resting her elbows on Kaitlyn’s legs. “Please?” She started to beg as she looked up at Kaitlyn with puppy dog eyes.
Kaitlyn shook her head.
“Come on? I’ll do anything for you if you go.”
“Why do you want me to go so bad?”
“Because,” Kaylee replied as she stood up.
“Why?”
“Boys, there will be lots of boys out. We can find you one.”
“Here we go again. Back to the Kaitlyn needs a boyfriend thing.”
“Yeah, we’ll keep going back to that too.”
“Why? I don’t need a man to be happy.”
Kaylee shook her head. “Obviously I’ve failed you as a friend.”
Kaitlyn started to laugh and said, “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Because I love boys you’ve been my roommate for three years now and I haven’t corrupted you or rubbed off on you or anything. I have failed.”
Kaitlyn rolled her eyes and then looked up at Kaylee who was pouting again and sighed. “If I go out tonight. You’ll never ask me again?”
Kaylee’s face lit up as she squealed a little. “Deal.”
Kaitlyn sighed and said, “Fine I’ll go.”
Yes, I gave in. But I think you would give in too if you had her breathing down your neck every weekend begging you to go out with her. Kaylee is very persistent. It’s ok though I do need a break. And I actually haven’t been out in public in a while. It might be nice to socialize.
Now we come to another issue in my life. Boys. In my whole life I’ve had two boyfriends. One of which was in third grade and the other when I was a sophomore in high school. I always intimidated them. I’ve always known what I wanted to do with my life. I’ve always known what I want period and I’ve always gone for it. I guess boys just don’t like that. But that doesn’t bother me at all. Like I said I don’t need a man to be happy.
“Damn girl you look hot,” Kaylee said as Kaitlyn walked out of the bathroom in a black mini skirt with a pink sleeveless shirt with little ties on the shoulders. Her normally straight brown hair was curly and she had done her eye make up with dark smokey colors.
“Stop staring,” Kaitlyn replied laughing as she walked passed Kaylee.
“I’m surprised. I haven’t seen you like this in a long time.”
“Well I do clean up nice huh?”
“Yeah, I’m thinking about changing you look better than me.”
“Psh, please.”
Kaylee laughed and asked, “So are you ready to go? Meet some boys?”
Kaitlyn sighed as she adjusted her skirt and then looked up at Kaylee. “Yeah I guess so.”
“Then let’s go,” Kaylee replied as she looped her arm with Kaitlyn’s as they walked out of the door.
“Woo,” Kaitlyn said sarcastically as she twirled her finger.
Kaylee looked at Kaitlyn and said, “Now now none of that my dear. No sarcasm missy,” She said pointing her finger at Kaitlyn.
Kaitlyn pressed her lips together keeping her from laughing, “Alright whatever you say.”
Kaylee put her arm around Kaitlyn’s shoulders and said, “You’re going to have fun.”
Kaitlyn smiled and nodded as they walked outside to Kaylee’s car.
“You want something to drink I’m going to go get me another one of these,” Kaylee asked Kaitlyn as they were dancing.
“Nah, if you keep drinking I’m going to drive home.”
“Damn it Kaitlyn we’ll call a cab or walk you are going to have fun,” Kaylee replied as she shook Kaitlyn by her shoulders a little.
Kaitlyn sighed, “Al-,” She started to say when she saw a couple of guys walk in. She watched them walk straight up into the VIP area.
“Hello?” Kaylee asked as she waved her hand in front of Kaitlyn’s face.
Kaitlyn blinked a few times and looked at Kaylee, “What?”
“You were saying?”
“I don’t remember,” Kaitlyn replied as she watched one of the guys talk to some girls that walked over to him.
“Who are you staring at?” Kaylee asked as she turned around looking where Kaitlyn was looking.
“Nothing.”
Kaylee turned around cocking an eyebrow at Kaitlyn. “Nothing?”
Kaitlyn looked at Kaylee innocently and shrugged.
“I see more than nothing,” Kaylee replied laughing.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“You wanna go talk to him?” Kaylee asked wiggling her eyebrows.
Kaitlyn looked at Kaylee with wide eyes. “Are you kidding? Do you know who he is?”
Kaylee looked back at him for a minute when he was scanning the crowd their eyes locked and Kaylee smiled and waved at him a little. Kaitlyn hit her in the arm and then she looked at him smiling a little and then turning Kaylee around to look at her.
“What are you doing?”
“You know he’s probably watching right?” Kaylee asked laughing.
Kaitlyn looked back up at him and sure enough he was watching and he was laughing. Kaitlyn groaned and then turned around and walked over to the bar.
“So who is he? I don’t know.”
Kaitlyn took a sip of her drink and muttered, “I’m not telling.”
“Then why did you bring it up?”
Kaitlyn shrugged.
“Come on.”
“No you’ll make fun of me even more.”
Kaylee looked back at the guy and then started laughing, “Is he one of those cute boy band guys you like?”
“Shut up. God, it’s not a bad thing that I like that kind of music. I listen to everything.”
Kaylee nodded and said, “Sure.”
“Shut up.”
“So who is he?”
“Nick Carter.”
Kaylee and Kaitlyn both looked up and saw him standing there with a rather amused look on his face. Kaitlyn covered her face with her hand while Kaylee smiled and stared at him.
“I’m Kaylee and this is Kaitlyn Anderson, she’s single.”
Kaitlyn hit Kaylee in the arm as she smiled at Nick a little.
“She’s shy,” Kaylee said as she patted Kaitlyn’s arm.
Nick laughed and then nodded, “Nice to meet you ladies. Maybe I’ll see you later,” He said as he grabbed his drink and then walked back over to the VIP section.
“You suck.”
“Damn boy got an ass,” Kaylee said as she watched him walk away.
Kaitlyn rolled her eyes and took another sip of her drink.
“We can hook you up with him.”
“Kaylee there will be no hooking up with anyone. I have way too much shit going on to be ‘hooking up’,” Kaitlyn replied as she walked back onto the dance floor.
Kaylee stood there grinning and said to herself, “We’ll see about that.”
