Historical Cookbook Collection

1700s - 1800s

Electronic books on CD

A Collection of Seven Cooking and Household Management Books of the 18th and 19th Centuries (1700s and 1800s).

"The cookbooks your great-great-great-great-grandmother used."

This CD would make a great GIFT for the Historical Reenactor in your family. These cookbooks contain authentic recipes from the pre-Renaissance period (1300s) through the mid-1800s and were the recipes in use during the formation of the United States. These recipes are historically correct for use from the French & Indian War period through the American Civil War. Many of these cookbooks also contain fascinating tidbits about life and customs of the day sprinkled throughout the text. Great reading even if you never plan on using any of the recipes.

Question from a potential customer: Does the CD contain scanned images of the original cookbooks or is it just recipes that someone has typed out? Can you send me an example of one of the pages? Kelly

Answer: Hi Kelly, Thanks for your inquiry. The CD does not contain scanned images of the original cookbooks. They contain the exact same text as the originals and because they are done in text format, the cookbooks can be searched by word or phrase to easily find a particular recipe or ingredient that might be of interest to you. I don’t have individual pages saved but most are done in 12 point Arial font for easy reading and the page size can be enlarged for better viewing while using Adobe’s free PDF Reader. Also, Adobe’s Reader allows for printing of individual pages or ranges of pages so it is relatively easy to print certain recipes that you would like to use over and over again. I’d also like to mention that aside from the recipes, many of these books contain little tidbits about daily life that give the reader insight into the customs and habits of the period in which the book was written.

  • The First American Cookbook: American Cookery, 1796 by Amelia Simmons - This is the first American cookbook published in the United States. Authentic recipes for colonial favorites – pumpkin pudding, winter squash pudding, spruce beer, Indian slapjacks, and more.

  • Directions for Cookery, in its Various Branches by Miss Eliza Leslie, 1840 - The success of her little book entitled "Seventy-five Receipts in Cakes, Pastry, and Sweetmeats." has encouraged the author to attempt a larger and more miscellaneous work on the subject of cookery, comprising as far as practicable whatever is most useful in its various departments; and particularly adapted to the domestic economy of her own country. Designing it as a manual of American housewifery, she has avoided the insertion of any dishes whose ingredients cannot be procured on our side of the Atlantic, and which require for their preparation utensils that are rarely found except in Europe.

  • Seventy-five Receipts for Cakes, Pastry, and Sweetmeats by Miss Eliza Leslie, of Philadelphia, 1832 - The receipts in this little book are, in every sense of the word, American; but the writer flatters herself that (if exactly followed) the articles produced from them will not be found inferior to any of a similar description made in the European manner.

  • Domestic Cookery, Useful Receipts, and Hints to Young Housekeepers, by Elizabeth E. Lea, 1845 - The compiler of "Useful Receipts and Hints to Young Housekeepers" having entered early in life upon a train of duties, was frequently embarrassed by her ignorance of domestic affairs. For, whilst receipt books for elegant preparations were often seen, those connected with the ordinary, but far more useful part of household duties, were not easily procured; thus situated, she applied to persons of experience, and embodied the information collected in a book, to which, since years have matured her judgment, she has added much that is the result of her own experiments.

  • English Housewifry Exemplified by Elizabeth Moxon, 1764 - In above FOUR HUNDRED AND FIFTY RECEIPTS, Giving DIRECTIONS in most PARTS of COOKERY; And how to prepare various SORTS of SOOPS, CAKES, MADE-DISHES, CREAMS, PASTES, JELLIES, PICKLES, MADE-WINES, &c. A BOOK necessary for Mistresses of Families, higher and lower Women Servants, and confined to Things USEFUL, SUBSTANTIAL and SPLENDID, and calculated for the Preservation of HEALTH, and upon the Measures of Frugality, being the Result of thirty Years Practice and Experience.

  • The Forme of Cury, A Roll of Ancient English Cookery (1780) Compiled, about A.D. 1390, by the Master-Cooks of King RICHARD II, Presented afterwards to Queen Elizabeth, by Edward, Lord Stafford, And now in the Possession of Gustavus Brander, Esq. - This vellum Roll contains 196 formula, or recipes, and belonged once to the earl of Oxford. The late James West, esquire, bought it at the Earl's sale, when a part of his MSS were disposed of; and on the death of the gentleman last mentioned it came into the hands of my highly-esteemed friend, the present liberal and most communicative possessor. It is presumed to be one of the most ancient remains of the kind now in being, rising as high as the reign of king Richard II. However, it is far the largest and most copious collection of any we have; I speak as to those times. To establish its authenticity, and even to stamp an additional value upon it, it is the identical Roll which was presented to queen Elizabeth, in the 28th year of her reign, by lord Stafford's heir.

  • Old Cookery Books and Ancient Cuisine by W. Carew Hazlitt, 1902 - To a proper and accurate appreciation of the cookery of ancient times among ourselves, a knowledge of its condition in other more or less neighbouring countries, and of the surrounding influences and conditions which marked the dawn of the art in England, and its slow transition to a luxurious excess, would be in strictness necessary.
