Launch date and time: May 12th, 2001, 10:00 AM.
Launch location: Shawnee Mission Park, Shawnee, KS

Weather is alway a concern when flying rockets, but on Saturday, May 12th, 2001, the KCAR was blessed with near perfect flying conditions. Winds were light and variable all day, and the temperature was near 80 F.

Since hay was growing in our normal field we held this launch at Shawnee Mission Park in Shawnee, KS. We would like to thank the Johnson County Parks and Recreation District for permitting us to use the park. Since this was a public place it provided high visibility to our NAR section. We saw many new people and met some folks who weren’t aware of our organized launch but were planning on flying rockets at the park that day anyway.

We also had a near perfect launch with only one rocket lost and very few less-than-perfect landings. The lost rocket was later found and returned to its owner. Although this field had its share of large trees, and of course a few rockets managed to find them, we were able to recover all of those that would have otherwise been tree food.

This was the first launch since purchasing our new PA system. The PA performed well throughout the day, and was deemed by all to be a Good Thing(tm).

By far this was the busiest launch KCAR has had since rechartering in 1999. There were a total of 152 flights with impulse ranging from Quest MicroMaxx through Aerotech ‘F’ motors.

Bob Wingate provided a memorable flight with “Bob’s Whistle Rocket” going up on C6-7 power. This rocket has two side pods with whistles that can be heard after motor burn-out. Dan Kirk flew his “Big Black Rocket” on a cluster of three C6-5 motors several times. Theo Asir flew an “S-Fire” with an Apogee E6-6 motor that just kept going, and going, and going. Although it flew for quite a distance, it landed very close to the range head. David Lucas entertained the crowd with two flights of his scratchbuilt “Flying Saucer,” going up both times on a D12-0, and landing perfectly both times. Emmanuel Camburako flew his much talked about “Oatlander” on a D12-3. The boost was nice but the lack of parachute deployment made it a less than perfect flight. Still, damage was minimal and the Oatlander will fly again. Jerome Tonneson flew his Custom Tristar on a Quest C6-7 for nearly out-of-site performance.

We would like to thank the following KCAR members who helped with this launch: Tim Burger, Bill Hensley, Dan Kirk, George Scheil, Andy Scheinost, John Skelton, Jerome Tonneson, Bob Wingate. We would also like to recognize Nick Stich for making it to the launch despite recovering from recent foot surgery. While his foot problems prevented him from racking up and chasing down rockets, he was able to proxy fly some interesting scratchbuilt rockets thanks to several KCAR members.

Total impulse expended: 1,797.225 Newton-seconds, like a partial K motor. There were eight clustered flights (#18, #35, #47, #69, #76, #88, #99, #102), and four multi-stage flights (#42, #66, #77, #133). There were 20 families for a total of 24 rocketeers.

If you have pictures taken during this launch please let us know so that they can be posted on the web site. If you can scan them and save them as GIFs or JPGs that would be great. If not, a few of the club members have scanners and can get the pictures into digital format. Send e-mail for details.

Please send e-mail if any corrections need to be made to this launch report.
