Island of Nguna, Village of Utanlang
May 14 continued
After walking about 5 minutes, it started to POUR rain. We walked past these chickens and onto the main road, which leads from Utanlang to the village that is on the southern tip of the island. As soon as we walked out onto the road, Brendan and I started feeling dizzy. We heard a rumbling and then the road was swaying back and forth! EARTHQUAKE! I looked it up later online and it had been a 6.3.
Since it was rainig, I couldn't take pictures for most of the hike. We went about 6 km along the base of the extinct volcano that is on Nguna. We stopped in this clearning on the way back to pick oranges.

Jimmy takes the lead, weighed down with a bag of oranges, sugar cane and island cabbage that he picked from his garden.
This is the MAIN ROAD, equivilent to a superhighway to Nguna!
Morning Glory - do these grow everywhere in the world?

There are a bunch of goats wandering around the outskirts of the village
We're coming back into the village now and passed this traditional hut. The roof being all the way to the ground is a good design for when cyclones hit.
a bunch of small homes tucked in the trees
The most modern building in the village is the church.
Chickens are wandering around everywhere, but they don't eat them or the eggs because its more valuable to trade or sell live birds.
