Port Vila
May 19
May 19 - On Monday Linda dropped Brendan and I off in town so that we could buy some stamps and little things to take home with us! I took the opportunity to capture this unique mural.
Fast food Vanuatu style.
Thank You Come Again!
There were all sorts of cool woven baskets and bags and wooden carved figures in this craft shop.
While we were in town this ENORMOUS cruise ship came into port for a few hours, meaning that the town would soon be exploding with sunburned Australian tourists that needed duty free stat! All the shops know when the ships are coming in and try to lure the tourists in with discounts.
We went back by the market and I bought some shell necklaces and bracelets and we got a coke bottle from the 40's with "Oakland California" printed into the bottom of it.
ENORMOUS white grapefruit - they are very sweet compared to what we get here.
This woman is chopping the husk off of coconuts with her bush knife, which is basically a machete. Everyone walks around with these knives - as Aunt Linda said, it's like their wallet, they don't go anywhere without it!
Kids hanging out while their parents sell goods
After the market we took the free ferry to Iririki for a little while. There were a lot of these big snails crawling on the buildings and trees.
Here is the Super Star Leo, a 12 story cruise ship with over 250,000 people aboard and 10 restaurants!
This is one of the huts that you can stay in on Iririki. We went back to the mainland after awhile and met Tom at his office to catch a ride home with him.
