Carmilla

Carmilla was published under a collection of short stories called In A Glass Darkly written by Sheridan Le Fanu in 1872.

The story took place in Styria and the main character Laura is persude by the vampire Carmilla. This is a vampire tale that was written in a gothic setting about a vampire and her female lover. This was also the first story ever written that used a female character.

Sheridan treated his vampires more like people than demons. Even though they were pale they could pass through society as humans. Sheridans vampires had needlike teeth that were not always seen and they often bit on the neck or chest of their victems.

Even though Carmilla was more nocturnal she could be out during the day. She possesed superhuman strength and could shpeshift into other animals her favorite was a cat.

Carmilla slept in a coffin. She also had to use antoher name using the letters of her true name. Her original name was Millarca but she later used Carmilla.

Through out the years many movies have been based off of the story. I have listed just a few.

Blood and Roses: This was a French movie but I used the Englis name rather than that of the french. It came out in 1964 and was directed by Roger Vadim and starred his wife Arnette Vadim.

Hammer Films: put out three different Carmilla movies Lust for a Vampire, Vampire Lovers (1970), and Twins of Evil (1971). Twins of Evil is said to be the bes adaption.

I'd also like to mention that the book had been adapted in to comic book form a couple of times.
