Appearences and Characteristics of Vampires

Skin

Here are some different or typical characteristics of skin for vampires. I have found them from reading or watching movies.

It is often said that vampire skin is extremly pale and cold to the touch. In some circumstances vampires have resembled the look of a bloated corpse. They've also been described as having tight skin. In Anne Rice's novels the skin hardens with age so that it gets to be as hard and pale as marble and even makes them look like statues.
*I will have more up here later.

Fangs

These really come in all shapes sizes and varieties. Let's name them off shall we. We can have long ones, small ones, retractable and non-retractable. Top and bottom set or just the top set. There is also two sets or one Then in the Movie Daughter of Darkness the vampires didn't have fangs but rather something came out of their tongues. You could also think of the Nosferatu in which the two front teath resemble a mix between rat teeth and fangs.

Hair

Most of the descriptions here are ment for the male vampires because as of yet I have not really seen to many stereotypes in females hair styles othere than black and long. If I see more I'll add them.

The most common type of hair especially for male vampires is the short, black, slicked backed hair with a widows peak. However though there are other styles. There is also long hair, non-styled hair, and hair absent of the widows peak. In my opinion I think that the long hair has become very popular. It seems in almost every book I read most of the vampires have long hair. The combinations can be any of these with or without the added stereotypes. The possibilities are endles. Ex. long hair, not styled with a widows peak

Eyes

Eyes are one thing people get really creative with. Often times the changes are nice and other times it can just ruin a movie. I think it all depends on the other features used in the book or film. I've noticed that the most common are eyes that change when you become a vampire. Some examples of this would be the use of red eyes throughout film history. There is also black eyes (this isn't very common actually but I've seen it in something before). Also another intresting thing done with eyes was in the movie version of Interview With the Vampire where they changed to a light blue.

Another thing I've seen was that your eyes only change when you feed. This technique was used in Innocent Blood. Although I didn't care for the movie I thought that it was rather cool. Although there have also been no changes in the eyes at all.

Various

These are just a mixture of different things you may or maynot see or read in vampire movies or books. Extended fingernails, elongated features like fingers, ears or even heads, hairy palms, and massive bushy eyebrows. Vampires can also be mature or young in years.

Cloathing

The choices here are very extreme in difference. I think the most popular sterotype for both males and females is evening wear this can be very old fashioned or not. This style is often decked out with a cape usually velvet and maybe lined with satin. Most of the time this cape is black with red lining.

Another popular wardrobe amoung the undead is leather. Most color choices tend to be black. Occasionally vampires wear every day ordinary clothing but I've rarely seen that one. Most often though they tend to dress in trendy or expensive cloathing.

Powers

Powers tend to change a lot. So much infact that I'm not going to get specific at least not yet. The strenghts or strength of vampires vary from type to type or just from one to another. Some can fly while others can not. Some vampires jump extreme distances others levitate. Some may send hypnotic suggestions or read minds. Some can shape shift while some have heightend scenses and nocturnal sight. Some have fast movement. Some my eat and drink while others can not. The list goes on and on with endless possibilities. Lets not forget that Lestat and some other very powerful vampires of Anne Rice can kill you using mental thoughts.

Weaknesses

Certain vampires can't do certain things while others have no problems with such small or large things. For instance some vampires have to have permission to enter certain places while others many enter freely wherever they choose. Some are repeled by garlic (I wonder why it's such a horrible scent). Some may be killed or repelled by holy water and other religious symbols such as crosses and eucharistic wafers while others would look at you and laugh their asses off and keep coming. A stake through the heart, silver, and lighting can also be effective ways to kill a vampire while to others it would not do any good. Fire, sunlight and beheading have been known throughout most vampires stories to be the most universal but even a few I have read stated that once a vampire gets old enough sunlight will no longer effect them. Fire is easily avoidable and can even be extinguished and if someone is kind enough to give you back your head in time death can be prevented. Some vampires may not leave their native soil and some may not be able to reveal their true name. There are so many more and I'll continue to put them up. Maybe I'll look into the reason why some of these are effect the vampire.
