Oatmeal Dog Cookies

(Your Puppy, Your Dog - A Kid's Guide to Raising a Happy, Healthy Dog, Pat Storer, 1997)

You can bake healthy treats for your dog in your own kitchen.  Save leftover meat scraps, cut them into very tiny pieces, and then store them in a bag or container in the freezer.  When you have saved about 2 cups of meat scraps, they can be dried on a cookie sheet in the oven and added to the recipe below.

To dry, place the cut-up meat on a cookie sheet in the oven at about 250 degrees Fahrenheit for about 30 to 45 minutes.  Remove them from the oven and let them cool.  What doesn't get used in the recipe can be saved for later.

1 1/2 cups of whole wheat flour
1 1/2 cups of oatmeal
1/2 cup of dried meat chips
1/4 cup of wheat germ
1/2 cup of nonfat instant milk powder
1/4 cup corn oil
2 tablespoons molasses

1/2 cup warm water

  1. Preheat your oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.

  2. Mix the dry ingredients well and add the liquids, stirring until well blended.

  3. Drop by teaspoons onto a greased cookie sheet.  Flatten with floured fingers or a fork.

  4. Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour.
