What
is 4-H? |
A 4-H Club is an organized group of boys and girls with officers, an adult
leader, and a planned program of club activities such as health, community
service, first aid, and recreation. The club is active throughout most of
the year.
4-H includes participating in community service projects, attending county
fairs, camps, and club parties and trips.
Members enroll in one or more project areas such as foods, gardening, crafts,
woodworking, electronics, horsemanship, beef, and dairy goats. The number
of projects a member is allowed to enroll in depends upon the member's age.
 |
What
do the four H's stand for? |
Head, Heart, Hands, and Health. This is the 4-H Pledge:
"I
Pledge...
My head to clearer thinking
My heart to greater loyalty
My hands to larger service
My health to better living
For my club, my community, my country, and my world."
 |
What
is the 4-H motto? |
"To Make the Best Better"
 | What
is the 4-H emblem? |
A green, four-leaf clover with a white "H" on each clover leaf.
 | Why
do young people like 4-H? |
They have fun with friends at meetings, social activities, tours, trips,
camps, and fairs. They learn to do interesting things such as take care
of animals, plants, redecorate their rooms, fix their bikes, take pictures,
practice cooking, and collecting rocks. And they help others to learn
more about their 4-H projects, provide leadership to younger kids, as well as
serve others through community service activities.
 | How
do you join? |
Contact the Ray County Extension Office or a local 4-H Club Leader.
The Extension Office or Club Leader can then refer you to a club located near
you. If the local clubs near you are full, several interested young
people with an adult or two to help them may start a new club. Check
with the Extension Office to determine which projects and activities are
available in your area.
 | Who
provides leadership in 4-H? |
4-H in Missouri is sponsored by University Outreach and Extension,
University of Missouri and Lincoln University. Nationally, it is part of
the Extension Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Local
leadership is provided by 4-H Youth Specialists in the county offices of
Outreach and Extension, which is supported financially by county, state, and
federal tax dollars.
 | Who
names a club? |
The members of the club, with guidance from
their leader and 4-H Youth Specialist, name their club.
