Alcohol and boating

Over 1200 people die in boating accidents each year.
Over 50% of those fatalities are alcohol related.
90% of the alcohol related fatalities are from drowning.

The effects of alcohol on a person while boating can be devastating. Alcohol effects your balance, vision, judgement, and coordination. Research has shown that alcohol, combined with boating stressors, can impair a person three times faster than alcohol consumption on land. The combination of boating stressors(which fatigue the body)and body dehydration, combine with the debilitating effect of alcohol to neutralize"learned" body functions.

Alcohol severely dimineshes your ability to react to several different signals from the brain at one time(learned functions). With the first drink, alcohol is absorbed into your bloodstream and your brain functions are surpressed. It starts taking longer for information to be processed by the brain and the more you drink, the more affected you become. The more affected you are,the longer it takes for what you see, hear, smell, and feel to register with any meaning.
Alcohol isn't the sport...Boating is! Limit your alcohol consumption to one drink or less per hour. Always eat before you drink and sip your drinks instead of gulping them. Remember, boating stressors alone can kill. Alcohol only speeds up the process.

Blood Alcohol Content

12 oz. of beer=5 oz. of wine=1 oz. 80 proof liquor.

With 2.1 drinks in two hours, a 100 pound person becomes impaired, when it takes a 240 pound person 4.1 drinks in 4 hours to become impaired.

With 4 drinks in 4 hours, a 100 pound person becomes intoxicated, while a 240 pound person will become intoxicated after 7 drinks in 7 hours.
Note: For every 18 degree increase in air temperature(above room temperature) the body's absorption rate for alcohol doubles.

Boating safety courses

The Missouri State Water Patrol offers a five day Water Safety Course during the winter months. This course targets the secondary and high school education systems to teach boating and water safety to future boaters. The five day course is recognized by the U.S. Coast Gaurd and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators. A certificate of completion is issued to any student making a passing grade on the final exam.
