History of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the first Greek letter
organization founded by and for Black college women, was established on
January 15, 1908. It was initiated by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle and fifteen other
ambitious and dedicated women at Howard University. The sorority was
founded for the purpose of encouraging high scholastic and ethical standards,
promoting unity and sisterhood and improving the social stature of
African-Americans. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was incorporated in 1913 to
perpetuate its existence throughout the world. Currently, membership in the
national organization totals over 140,000 women in the United States, the
Caribbean, Europe and Africa. Though membership is spread across the seas,
all sorors uphold the standards of high scholarship, leadership, service and
exemplary character.
