Tips on writing a successful fan letter
1. Keep it short and sweet. Nobody wants to read a five-page essay.
2. Don't send pictures of your children or grand children. No one cares but you.
3. Don't sound like a 'form letter'. Be sincere and original. Don't be the ten millionth person to tell Sylvester Stallone how great he was in 'Rocky.' Instead, compliment him on his excellent job on 'Saturday Night Live' or ask about a charity you and he might have in common.
4. Write legibly. If you can barely read your writing, a celebrity or their assistant can't read it at all.
5. Always include a self-addressed stamped envelope (S.A.S.E.) for a reply. Make it as easy as possible for the celebrity to respond to you. Whenever possible, send the celebrity an 8X10 of themselves to sign for you. It will usually get a quicker response.
6. Gimmicks never work. Saying your 99-year-old great-grandmother is on her deathbed and only a personal phone call from the celebrity will keep her alive long enough to see her 100th birthday will not work.
7. Be patient. You know all those 'thank you' letters you promised to write your relatives after Christmas or your last birthday but never got around to? Well, multiply that by about a thousand and you get a little sense of the life of the rich and famous. Remember, your letter is one of many your favorite celebrity will receive in tomorrow's mail.
