Maya stomped down the hall,Do I really have to call Zac? I really don't want to, he just left and I really don't want to be pestered with all of his supid questions at the moment.
Maya turned in the direction of the phones anyways, she had to call Dave, and her mother. She picked up the phone and punched in Dave's number.
Ring...ring...
"Hello?" answered a groggy voice.
"Dave!"
"Maya?"
"Oh Dave, I'm at the hospital!! Holly had an accident, she's really sick. They think she has menengitis which is what my cousin Clint died of last year. I'm really worried about her, Zac just went home, we don't know his number he's practically dieing waiting to find out what's going to happen and oh Dave, I'm so worried," she started crying then. She couldn't contain herself, she was hystarical.
"Maya it's ok..." Dave paused trying to think of the right thing to say. "I bet Holly will be just fine. As for Zac...ummmm..do you mean Zac Hanson?"
"Yes," Maya answered weakly.
"Oh, well there's nothing I can do for you there," he said. Then added gruffly, "You could probably ask Holly if she got his number."
"Okay, thank-you Dave. Will you come to the hosptial? Please? I really need you here."
"I don't know, I have to work today and really need my beauty sleep, it's 12:08am. So I don't think I'll be able to make it, sorry Maya," his apoligy was empty and fake. There was no sympathy at all in his voice.
Dave couldn't see or hear the distress in her voice, I wish he'd come I need someone to lean on right about now. Tears suddenly came to her eyes. She wiped them away frantically as she heard foot steps down the hall.
"That's ok," Maya lied. "I'll be fine. I just thought you might what to see Holly, but I guess you can see her later on. I'll let you go now. Good-night."
"Bye."
"Have a nice sleep," Maya added through clenched teeth.
1 HOUR LATER"Isaac Please come in the hospital with me, I don't what to go alone!" Zac begged his brother. Maya had found the number in Holly's room, Zac had written it down before he left.
"Zac," Isaac said with a laugh, "I've told you I would 3 times already."
"I know I was just making sure you didn't change your mind."
The brothers walked silently in to the hospital, it was still early in the morning (5:00 AM) but Zac hadn't been able to sleep and he made Isaac take him to the hospital. Fortually Isaac seemed to be in a good mood, and hadn't complained once.
When they reached Holly's room, Zac peered in to the room to find Holly all alone and wide awake.
"Could you go wait in the Lobby? I what to have some time alone with Holly," Zac whispered to his brother.
"Sure, but just remember that I'm not your personal choffeur. We have to leave soon."
"Yeah, sure," Zac brushed off the comment and slyly went in to Holly's room.
Maya sat quietly staring at the wall in the Lobby, she still couldn't bring her self to think that anything bad would happen to Holly.
"What's wrong?" A voice asked startaling her.
Maya turned around only to find Isaac Hanson staring at her sympathically.
"Is Zac here?" She asked
"Yeah he's visiting a girl he met yesterday....why?"
"He's visiting Holly?" Maya questioned again.
"Yes, how'd you know that?"
"She's my friend, I'm so gald I found that paper. Zac wanted to know as soon as we knew something about Holly," Maya stopped realizing that Isaac was looking at her with a kind of intrest in his eye's. "What? Do I have something in my teeth?"
"No I was just wondering why you are so sad. I mean it's not like your friend is dying."
Maya told Isaac the story of Clint dying for Meningitis, and that the doctors thought that he just had a mild case and he would be fine. Maya couldn't figure out for the life of her why she was being so trusting towards him. She hadn't told anyone about Clint, only Dave but that was so he would believe her in how serious Holly's diease was. By the end of her story Maya was in tears, and Isaac was comforting her, something that Dave hadn't done.
"Don't worry Holly will be fine," Isaac said stroking Maya's head. "Things are only going to get better."
After a couple minutes Maya looked up.
"Thanks, somehow you've managed to make me feel better," Maya managed to smile.
Isaac kept stroking her head and muddering good things about how Holly would be ok, even though his mind was on something else. She is so beautiful, with that curly brown hair. I like her, I really like her. I think I'm in... what am I saying? I can't love someone I just met. But I do like her, that's for sure. I'd ask her out, but it's not the right time now. She is in so much pain.
I sat up in bed as Zac walked in to my room
"How are you doing?" he asked sitting in the chair that my mom had sat in before the doctor asked her to see him in his office.
"Not so well..." I let my voice trail off, because I was on the verge of tears.
"Don't cry," Zac said softly. A single tear fell from my eye, he wiped it away with the back of his hand.
"I'm finding it hard not to cry when I'm being told that I'm dying," I said sharply, totally destroying the mood Zac had hoped for.
"Holly, you aren't dying! You're strong, you'll pull through. You have your family, your friends..." he paused and took my hand, "...and you have me."
I looked at my hand in Zac's. My eyes drifted up to his eyes. "Thank-you Zac. Thank-you for believing in me. Thank-you for backing me up. Thank-you for being here. Thank-you for everything."
"No problem," he answered. "That's what I'm here for. And I'll always be here Holly, you remember that."
I rested my head on Zac's shoulder and closed my eyes.
About 10 minates later Maya and Isaac walked in.
Me and Zac's heads shot up.
"Hi..." Isaac smiled at Zac. My little brother's all grown up now.
Zac gave his brother a look that basically said, "Isaac get that dumbass grin off your face before I have to beat ya."
"Holly, look, I am SO sorry I stormed out of here before, it's just that... it's that I'm worried about you," Maya took a deep breath and hoped her apoligy was okay.
"It's okay Maya," I held my arms out to Maya who greatfully hugged me back.
Maya sat down on the bed edge of the bed and closed her eyes, "This has been hell. I'm so freaking tired, all I want is Holly to be better and for me to sleep."
"Diddo," Holly agreed.
The room was silant for a few minates. Everyone was half asleep when they heard a knock at the door.
"Hel-lo!" a candystriper said in a sing-songy voice. "I brought you your water jug!"
"Thanks," I said weakly. "Put it over there."
The candystiper smiled an even bigger and even more fake smile *RNOTE: We know this 'cause we're candystipers and do it ourselves. It's sickening.* and put the water jug on the bedside table.
"Good-Bye!" she said and walked out of the door.
Maya waited until the red and white girl had dissapared down the hall and groaned, "Damn perky candystripers make me ill."
Everyone laughed and seemed happy for a minate.
"What time is your mom going to be back?" Isaac asked, hating to pull everyone back to reality.
"I don't know, but I'm sure it can't be too long now." I noticed I was still holding Zac's hand and gave it a squeeze.
He looked up at me, "Everything will be fine, don't worry about it." He then returned the squeeze and smiled at me.
As if on cue my mum and Granny walked in the room, smiling.
"Was it good news?" I asked, half knowing from the smiles on their faces.
"Great news! Holly, you don't have Meningitis!!" Ms. McCann's smile grew even bigger.
Everyone (espashally Maya) cheered. I was happy Zac was right. Zac was happy Holly would be all right. Isaac was just happy because everyone else in the room was happy.
"But..." Ms. McCann started.
"BUT? BUT WHAT?" Maya raised her voice with each word.
"Calm down Maya," Holly's Granny went over to Maya and rested her hand on Maya's shoulder.
"But," Ms. McCann continued, "Holly still has Mono like we first thought. She'll be on antibiotics and sent home by the end of the day. She'll have to spend a good couple of weeks in bed."
I started to protest but my mother intrupted me.
"Holly, don't worry, you'll WANT to stay in bed. You'll be tired out of your mind."
I shrugged and leaned back on my bed. It wasn't until my mom had said I'd be tired that I realised how exausted I really was. "Thanks mom. I'm a little tired right now actually."
"We'll leave you now," Granny said.
"No! It's okay, you can stay..." I yawned.
"I won't hear of it everyone out! Maya, Martha, Zac...ummm...who are you? I'll find out in the hall now OUT! Scoot," Granny was on a mission.
On the way out everyone stopped to give me a hug (even Zac!!)...except Isaac who just said, "I'm glad it wasn't that serious," and smiled real big for her.
I watched them all leave. I feel asleep as soon as the door closed.
