The Marquard Center

These are all pictures of the Marquard Center. It is the soup kitchen we helped at. Downstairs was the kitchen area, and we stayed in the living quarters upstairs. This was not an overnight shelter for the homeless of the area. That building was several miles away, but we did take a tour of that building, and of course I have pictures. Father Manny (the one in charge) and the whole staff at the Marquard Center were very hospitable to our group. We shared the living space with four people from Germany. I feel bad, because the only names I can remember are Olive and Kumu. Oliver was especially cool, because he made sure I was not stingy with the corn!

The Living Room

I'm not sure which day this is, but we are all in the living room discussing our plans for the day. The person with her back to the camera is Sister Pam, who works in the shelter. She was very helpful as she acted as our guide to Chicago. Her only mistake was encouraging us to eat at Hollywood Diner. (We'll get to that in a moment.) Notice the furniture. Looks like it's made of marshmallows, doesn't it? It was soft like marshmallows, but I don't think it tasted anything like marshmallows.

Disco, anyone?

You can get a better view of the marshmallow couches here. Brother Loyola offered to take us to a disco that night, but unfortunately we didn't end up there. He was a great chaperone. He had a lot of fun with us, especially when we were lost for an hour and a half in Chicago!

Listenin' to the Hits!

I just want to say that I did not take the picture of Sarah in the girls' bedroom. That was Angie. Sarah must have had some good music, because in almost every picture of her, she's listening to her Discman.

Evidence

Once again, I did not take this picture in the girls' bedroom. I wonder what Rob was doing in there, though. I now have evidence! You better watch out, Rob. I might be tempted to turn you in!

Three Bumps on a...Couch?

Sara, Sarah, and Rob seem a little tired here, don't they? This must have been late in the week.

Yet Another Chaperone

This is Sister Denise, our campus minister and "Mom." We owe her a lot for giving up her spring break to take us to Chicago. She probably had no idea what she was getting herself into! Thanks, Sister. We had a great time. I wish I could go again next year!
