Bad second period gives Mocs first loss
Arkansas takes over Eastern Division lead with 5-3 victory.
The Monroe Moccasins' season-opening three-game winning streak ended Friday as Richard Uniacke had two goals and two assist to lead the Arkansas GlacierCats to a 5-3 victory over Monroe before 3,267 at Barton Coliseum in Little Rock.
Uniacke's first goal of the game capped a three-goal burst by the GlacierCats late in the second period and gave them a 4-2 lead.
After GlacierCats goaltender Christian Soucy stopped Monroe's Matt Cressman on a breakaway, the play went the other direction. Uniacke took a pass from Brian Secord and floated in front of Monroe goaltender Martin Engren before wristing it into the net.
"We played four minutes and fifty seconds of really bad hockey," Monroe coach Brian Curran said of the second-period collapse.
Tim Findlay, Joel Dezainde and Rob Giffin also scored for the GlacierCats (3-1-1, 7 points), who are now in first place in the WPHL's Eastern Division. Sean Freeman, Lucas Miller and Kelvin Solari scored for Monroe (3-1-0, 6 points).
"We made some really bad mistakes and you can't do that against a good hockey team," Curran said. "We had some good chances in the third period -- a 4-on-3 and we hit the post -- but they got the breaks tonight."
The game ended on an ugly note as Monroe's Lukas Smital took a baseball swing with his stick at GlacierCats defenseman Mervin Kopeck, cutting him on the face. GlacierCats winger Brad Domonsky then fought Monroe's Ty Hartigan, who held on for dear life, with no time left on the clock.
