Mocs keep rolling

Monroe holds off Lake Charles in shootout, 3-2, to extend Eastern lead.

The Monroe Moccasins shook off the rust from a five-day layoff Friday, using strong goalkeeping and late scoring to defeat host Lake Charles in a 3-2 shootout.

Clint Owen made 38 saves for the Moccasins (10-3-1), who have now won five straight road games. Owen stopped four of the five shots in the shootout.

Ty Hartigan had the game-winning goal in the overtime for Monroe, now 2-1 in shootouts this season.

The Moccasins extended their Eastern Division lead to four points over Lake Charles and the Alexandria Warthogs.

After a scoreless first period, Lake Charles took the 1-0 lead on a David Barozzino power-play goal five minutes left in the second period.

Monroe then took the lead in the third period on goals from Lukas Smital (his fifth of the season) and Kelvin Solari (his fifth), before the Ice Pirates (8-4-1) evened up the game a 2-all on a Jamie Dunn goal at the 11:25 mark.

"Our goaltender had some real big saves," Mocs coach Brian Curran said. "That game could have gone either way."

Monroe and Lake Charles meet again today a 7 p.m. in the Snake Pit.
