Mocs' return home unkind

Lake Charles snaps Monroe's three-game winning streak, 5-3.

Monroe entered Saturday's game against Lake Charles on a roll, but the Ice Pirates cooled the Mocs off with a 5-3 win in the Snake Pit.

Lake Charles center Bill Lund knocked a one-timer past goalie Clint Owen five minutes into the third period to put the Ice Pirates ahead for good, but it was goalie Bryan Schoen who provided the difference.

"He was huge tonight," Lake Charles coach Bob Loucks said. "Their guys made some good plays, but he playedreal hard tonight."

The loss snapped Monroe's three-game winning streak entering the game after sweeping its three-game road trip. The Mocs fell to 9-3-1, but still leads the Western Professional Hockey League Eastern Division with 19 points.

"They played a good game," Mocs coach Brian Curran said. "They run a very high cycle and had a lot of good opportunities. But we had a lot of chances in the last five minutes, unfortunately their goalie made the good saves he had to."

Right winger Dorian Anneck continued his hot play of late, putting the Mocs up 1-0 on a breakaway chance against Schoen. Anneck took a length-of-the-ice pass from Russ Parent and buried the puck past Schoen for a 1-0 first period lead.

"On the first one, Yoder made a great pass and put the puck right on my tape," Anneck said. "I went in alone with the goalie and put it in. On the second one, there was a loose puck in the neutral zone and I just went down the side and shot it."

That lead was short-lived however, as the Ice Pirates knocked three goals past Marten Engren before the Mocs responded.

Ryan Rintoul, David Barozzino and Randy Favaro all scored for Lake Charles to give the Ice Pirates a 3-1 lead and ending Engren's night in net.

But the Mocs didn't fold, as Lukas Smital blasted a short-handed chance past Schoen before Anneck tallied his second goal of the night.

Smital's goal at the 8:02 mark of the second period, seemed to ignite the Mocs, as the forward took a face-off pass from Matt Cressman and blistered his shot past Schoen to trim the lead to 3-2.

Anneck's second goal knotted the score at 3-3, and the Mocs seemed to be about to take control, but Lund's one-timer in the slot, from a John Hanson pass, caught Owen off guard and gave the Ice Pirates a 4-3 lead

the Ice Pirates added an empty-netter with one second remaining in the game to seal the deal.
