Monroe drops 3-2 shootout on road

Once again the Monroe Moccasins had no answer for a hot Alexandria goalie, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Warthogs in a shootout Saturday.

Matt Turek fillped the puck past Marten Engren to end the Mocs' three-game winning streak in the shootout.

Monroe and Alexandria alternated goals through the first two periods. The Warthogs held a 1-0 advantage on Bill Weir's goal with 45 seconds to play in the first period.

Defenseman Jeff Pawluk answered for the Mocs, before Weir again knocked the puck past Engren for a 2-1 Alexandria lead.

Lukas Smital tied the score late in the second period, and both teams skated to a scoreless tie in the third period, unable to break the deadlock.

Engren had a solid night in goal, stopping 26 chances. His counterpart Sean Basilio, matched the Mocs goalie, with 26 saves of his own.

Monroe will next travel to Shreveport for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Eastern Division-leading Mudbugs on Tuesday night.
