Goalie Christian Soucy and the Arkansas GlacierCats shut out Monroe 2-0 to complete a two-game sweep in the best-of-3 opening round series. The loss, coupled with Tuesday's 5-4 overtime loss in Monroe, quickly eliminates a Moccasins team that thought it had the ability to compete for the league title.
"It's disappointing. There's not any words right now," Monroe winger Dorian Anneck said.
Instead of continuing the march toward a championship, the Moccasins were sent home because of their inability to capitalize on the power play and another stellarperformance by Soucy.
Monroe was 0-of-4 on the power play in each of the first and second periods and finished 0-of-9 for the game.
"The power play wasn't there tonight," Monroe coach Brian Curran said. "We had lots of opportunities to win the game."
Said Soucy: "Penalty killing was the key tonight. I think we shut them out both games (on the power play). PK's been struggling all year, but there's no better time to turn it around."
The Moccasins outshot the GlacierCats 40-29, but Soucy, who made several spectacular saves in the overtime Tuesday, was like a magnet, attracting any puck that the Moccasins fired his wasy.
"Soucy definitely had an outstanding game," Anneck said. "We made one mental mistake on the second goal. After that goal, we were really behind the eight-ball."
Arkansas, which advances to face either Shreveport or Central Texas in the second round, took a 1-0 lead into the third period but gained some breathing room at 5:45 of the third period. Richard Uniacke won a face-off in the GlacierCats' attack zone, slapping the puck out to Brian Pellerin, who wristed a shot past Clint Owen into the top corner of the net.
With Soucy on top of his game, the two-goal edge was more than enough to send the GlacierCats into the second round and leave the Moccasins with a tough bus ride back to Monroe.
"all of us were really confident before the game, and we all believed we could get this one and head back to Monroe tomorrow," Anneck said.
It was a physical matchup with the intensity and hard hitting expected from a playoff game with elimination at stake. The game had several players left in pain on the ice or having to leave the game.
Curran was not happy with a lot fo the hits, including an apparent elbow to the throat of forward Matt Cressman that took him out of action.
"I will be sending the league a tape," Curran said on the topic of the hit.
After a scoreless rough and tumble first period that featured 12 penalties, Arkansas took advantege of a power play early in the second to jump out on top. The GlacierCats started the second with a man advantage thanks to a tripping call on Monroe's Brendan Kenny just eight seconds before the end of the first period.
Arkansas made the most of the chances, scoring just 1:35 into the second on a goal by Tim Finday, who had the game- winner in overtime Tuesday to beat the Mocs. Findlay positioned himself in front of the net and slapped a shot past Owen for the 1-0 lead.
Monroe squandered a golden op[ortunity to score late in the second period. Monroe had a 5-on-3 power play for 1:27 and an additional man advantage for another 33 seconds in the final three minutes, but could not take advantage, thanks to Soucy.
The outcome of the series was redemption for the GlacierCats, who lost to the Mocs in the first round last season after winning the first game.
The GlacierCats' revenge left the Moccasins wondering what could have been.
