Back of goal hard to find

Mocs drop 4-2 decision to Arkansas despite good shooting night

Another opposing goalie on top of his game and some untimely breakdowns added up to a loss for the Moccasins on Saturday night in their regular-season home finale.

Arkansas netminder Christian Soucy made several spectacular saves in stopping 33 of 35 Monroe shots, and the GlacierCats scored two goals in the first 7 1/2 minutes of the third period to spark a 4-2 win over the Moccasins in front of a crowd of 3,186 at the Monroe Civic Center.

"We played horrible; they beat us; they deserve to win. There's nothing else to say," Moccasins coach Brian Curran said.

The GlacierCats (31-29-9, 71 points), who had just 12 skaters, appeared tired and were outshot 35-20. But Soucy's play kept Monroe off the scoreboard early and gave his Arkansas team-mates a boost.

The loss Saturday was similar to Friday's 4-3 home loss to Lake Charles, in which the Mocs outshot Lake Charles 39-20, but Ice Pirates goalie Bryan Schoen kept Monroe in check most of the game.

The loss means Monroe (38-25-6, 82 points) will finish in third place in the Western Professional Hockey League's Eastern Division and have the No. 4 seed in the Eastern bracket for the playoffs.

Monroe will be at home Tuesday to start a best-of-3 series against either Tupelo or Arkansas. If Tupelo beats Monroe today or losses in a shootout, the T-Rex will face Monroe in the first round. If Tupelo loses in regulation and Arkansas beats Lake Charles, then Arkansas and Monroe will meet in the first round.

The weary GlacierCats led 2-1 going into the final period and appeared ready to wilt under the Moccasins' pressure. But Arkansas scored a pair of goals on Monroe breakdowns. Rob Giffin scored his second goal of the game at 2:44 of the third when he took the puck around the net, and no one was back to help goalie Marten Engren as Giffin netted the wraparound shot.

Arkansas increased the lead to 4-1 at 7:28 as Tim Findlay stole a pass near the red line, skated into the attack zone past Rob Szatmary and past the puck to Brian Secord for an easy goal.

Monroe added a goal at 8:24 when Lukas Smital scored his fourth goal in two days after a hat trick on Friday. Monroe kept the presure up the rest of the period and had several solid chances to score, but Soucy stopped them each time.

"It's really disappointing. I'm not happy," Curran said.

Curran did not place the blame on Engren, who stopped 16-20 shots.

"It's hard to stop shots when you're facing 2-on-1s all night," Curran said.

It was a big turnaround for Arkansas, which lost 9-3 at Shreveport on Friday.

"We put our minds into it and did it together," Soucy said.

Curran was happy with a spirited effort in Friday's loss to Lake Charles, but after Saturday's game, said the players need to find the proper focus.

"Bottom line is, it's up to them in that dressing room," he said.

Arkansas went ahead 1-0 at 4:02 of the first period. Findlay took a shot at Engren, the puck bounced away and Ben Maidment picked up it up and beat Engren for the score.

Giffin scored his first goal on a gift from Monroe. Defenseman Jason Smith flipped the puck away from the boards in the Arkansas attack zone . John Murphy grabbed the puck, slid it to MacMillan, who then fed Giffin for an easy goal.

Monroe answered less thatn two minutes later. Duncan Dalmao blasted a hard shot at Soucy , Chris Rowland picked up the rebound and poked it in for a score at 15:06.
