Warthogs forward Chris Peach scored twice, including the game winner in the shootout, as Alexandria handed the Mocs only their second defeat when leading after two periods.
Said Alexandria coach Zruna: "I think Colonel's team, with the late game last night didn't have as much jump in them in the third period. We were lucky to take advantage of that."
Peach's first goal came late in the third period on a Warthogs power play. With Monroe left wing Kelvin Solari and defenseman Brendan Kenny in the penalty box, Alexandria took advantage.
Peach redirected a puck past Mocs goalie Clint Owen at the 16:17 mark of the third period to tie the game and force the shootout.
Peach may have been the hero, but he drew harsh criticism from Monroe coach Brian Curran about a penalty called on the Alexandria forward midway through the period.
"That was an intentional hatchet swing, which deserved a five-minute penalty," Curran said. "It was right in front of the official, and he didn't call it.
"Then, with a 2-1 hockey game, he puts us down two men short because he's (upset) at me, and he loses his composure. That's what happened tonight."
In addition to the slash on Monroe forward Ty Hartigan, two penalties called late in the third period angered Curran even more.
"I don't get mad at officials, until a player intentionally hurts one of my players right in front of them, and they don't do anything about it," Curran said. "He thought it was a little tap and peach almost broke Hartigan's arm."
Monroe right wing Dorian Anneck tied the score early in the second period. He took a pass in the middle of the Warthogs zone from linemate Darren Dougan and went top shelf past goalie Sean Basilio tying the game 1-1.
Later in the period, Anneck set up Sean Freeman's goal, which gave Monroe a 2-1 lead.
This came after Alexandria held a 1-0 lead after the first period, thanks to a goal by Warthogs forward Chris Low.
Monroe returns to action on Feb. 6 with a road game at Lake Charles.
