The win catapults the Mudbugs over Monroe for first place in the Western Professional Hockey League's Eastern Division. Shreveport is 24-12-4 with 52 points and Monroe is 25-14-1 with 51 points.
In his entire professional hockey career, Hill has only scored 25 goals. Yet, after his performance Saturday, he's got 21 as a Mudbug.
"This is a good win for us, especially from the perspective that we beat a divisional rival," Shreveport coach Jean Laforest said. "We need to continue build up momentum and continue to build up confidence. This is a good step for us."
The first three goals for the Mudbugs came relatively easy. Toby Bukitt scored the game's first goal, tipping in his own rebound by goaltender Marten Engren.
After Dorian Anneck's goal tied the score at 1-1, Trevor Buchanan intercepted a cross-ice pass at the Monroe blue line, setting up a 2-on-1 with Hill. Buchanan's floated a pass to Hill, who simply lifted it over Engren.
Monroe nibbled away at Shreveport leads of 3-1 and 4-2, pulling to within one goal each time. Kelvin Solari's second goal of the gamewith seconds remaining in the scond period pulled the Moccasins to within 4-3.
In a wide-open third period, the Moccasins outshot the Mudbugs 14-6, but the Mudbugs, particuarly goaltender Hugo Hamelin rose to the challenge.
