Such was the case Saturday, as the Shreveport Mudbugs halted Monroe's franchise record-tying seven-game winning streak and its six-game home winning streak with a 3-2 win over the Moccasins.
To halt the streak, the mudbugs and goalie Hugo Hamelin had to hold off a flurry at the end of the game. Monroe trailing 3-0 with four minutes to play in the third period before mounting a comeback.
"They scored in a six-on-four situation, which was a crucialgoal for them," Shreveport coach Jean Laforest said. "We had 17 seconds to kill off the penalty, and they capitalized on it. They made things interesting in the last few minutes and put us back on our heels."
"But our guys responded to the pressure."
After a scoreless first period, the Mudbugs scored in the beginning, middle and end of the second period to take a 3-0 lead into the third period.
Mudbug forward Tim Hill got the ball rolling with a one-timer in the slot past Monroe goalie Marten Engren. Hill took a pass from center Jason Campbell, who was on his right, and went topself past the Monroe netminder.
Goals by Stephan Simoes midway through the period and Toby Burkitt with less than a minute to play in the second seemed to spell the end for the Mocs.
That was until late in the third period.
Hamelin had stoned the Mocs through the first 56 minutes of play, until Coach Brian Curran pulled Engren out of the net and set up a two-man advantage.
Monroe center Darren Dougan capitalized, getting the Mocs' first goal 16:59 into the third period. Mocs forward pulling Monroe within 3-2.
"If we would have played the whole game like the last four minutes it would have been a different story," Freeman said. "Unfortunately it took us until the last four minutes and us being down 3-0 to wake up."
The barrage continued, as Monroe mounted a fierce comeback attempt. But Hamelin repelled the rest of the Mocs' shots and came up victorious to cap off the first half of the season with a win.
"He played a great game," Laforest said of his goalie. "Hugo kept us in the game. He made key saves when they neede to be made.
"In his last few games he had allowed a few soft goals, and we were detemined not to let that happen again. This was what he needed."
For Shreveport, the win pulls them within four points of Monroe in the Western Professional Hockey League's Eastern Division. Monroe leads with a 23-11-1 record and 47 points. Shreveport (20-12-3) is second with 43 points.
"Shreveport played a very good game," Curran said. "We played average in the first. In the second period they beat us low. If we do the same thing to them, and take care of business it's a different outcome.
"Tonight was not our night. The key will be how we repond after the loss. We play Tupelo on Tuesday and we can either play our 'A' or 'B' game. It's my job to make it our 'A' game."
