Late goal lifts Mocs to 4-3 win
Anneck, who leads the Moccasins with 49 points, scored two goals, including the game winner with 51 seconds remaining in the third period, to propel Monroe to a 4-3 win over the Warthogs.
"He's been playing well," Monroe coach Brian Curran said after Anneck scored two goals for the second consecutive game. "He's definitely picked up his level of play. He'll admit he didn't play well in the first two periods, but he's been a pleasant surprise."
With the game knotted at 3-3, Anneck took the puck in the Monroe zone and skated untouched in on Alexandria goalie Marc Pethke.
Anneck fired a shot through Pethke's legs and into the back of the net, sending the crowd of 1,642 into a celebration.
"Rusty (Russ Parent) made a brilliant pass to me in our zone," Anneck said. "I went down the ice, and Darren (Dougan) picked a couple of guys off at the blue line. I was fortunate to get the goal through the five hole."
Monroe trailed 3-2 heading into the third period. And for much of the period it looked like lady luck would continue to smile on the Warthogs.
Despite being outshot 32-13 entering the period, Alexandria led 3-2. Monroe finished the game outshooting the Warthogs 48-18.
"We didn't play well the first two periods," Curran said. "We had a lot of shots, but not a lot of second chances. In the third period there was a lot more movement. We were fighting through checks and we played like we had for the past 10 games."
The Mocs picked up the pace in the third period, but Pethke kept the Warthogs ahead. Until Monroe forward Ty Hartigan made the score 3-3.
Hartigan took a pass directly in front of Pethke from defenseman jason Carriere and flicked the puck past the Alexandria goalie to tie the game midway through the third period.
"I slid in and Carriere gave me a nice pass," Hartigan said. "There wasn't much I could do to screw it up."
Alexandria (11-14-5) held a 1-0 lead after the first period, thanks to a Chris Peach goal.
Monroe defenseman Duncan Dalmao, who celebrated his 21st birthday Thursday, smacked a shot from the blue line past Pethke to tie the score 4:06 into the second period.
The score bobbed back and forth after that as Alexandria center Chris Low slipped the puck past Monroe goalie Marten Engren at the 6:41 mark before Anneck evened the game 19 seconds later.
Warthog forward Valeri Osiecki scored on a rebound late in the second period to push Alexandria back into the lead heading into the third period.
But Curran knew his squad, who had been off the past two days, had something more to give in the third period.
"I told them if they didn't work in the third period, they'd work tomorrow," Curran said.
the players heeded his advice, and got their fifth consecutive win overall and fourth consecutive home win.
"This was a big win for us," Hartigan said. "Going into tonight we were tied 2-2 in the series and we feel we're a better team than they are, but we haven't been playing well against them. It was nice to get out there in the third period and get the tying goal and the win."
