Monroe moves into sole possession of first place.
That was before Tuesday night, when the Mocs knocked two goals past Lake Charles goalie Bryan Schoen in the second period en route to a 3-1 Western Professional Hockey League win over the Ice Pirates at the Monroe Civic Center.
Monroe entered the game with a minus-6 ratio in goals scored against to goals given up in the second period.
"Our second period has definitely been our shortfall in the past," right winger Dorian Anneck said. "Coach (Brian Curran) always tells us to pick it up and stay focused, and Sols (Kelvin Solari) started us off with a nice goal, and I was able to get another in the second."
The win was the third straight for Monroe and increased the Moccasins record to 19-10-1 and gives them sole possession of first place in the WPHL Eastern Division with 39 points. Shreveport is second with 37 points.
"This was a good team effort," Curran said. "Everyone played well. There was a lot of movement, we picked up the execution and it was a good all-around game from all three lines, all six defensemen and Marten Engren in net."
After a scoreless first period that saw the two goalies perform brilliantly between the pipes. Monroe winger Solari put the Mocs up 1-0.
Monroe defensemen Russ Parent held the puck in the Ice Pirates zone and started the scoring chance. Parent fed Ty Hartigan with the puck. Hartigan then found center Jayme Adduono in close to the net.
Adduono fired a shot at Schoen, who repelled the first attempt, but Solari followed up to give Monroe the early second-period lead.
The score held until midway through the period when Anneck scored his team-leading 19th goal.
Anneck collected the puck around the Monroe blue line and ended up on a two-on-one chance with forward Sean Freeman to his right.
But the crafty Anneck took Schoen on alone, firing a wrister past the Lake Charles netminder's pad for a 2-0 Monroe lead.
"That all depends on the situation," Anneck said. "I was in a good spot, and I'm not going to pass up a shot like that. I took it and was fortunate to get the goal."
That, and the stellar play of Engren, helped the Moccasins extend one of their of the most impressive of their numbers. The Mocs are now 11-0-0 when leading after two periods.
