The history of the Philippine Collegian was printed in the February 14, 1996 Collegian Alumni Homecoming publication entitled, "Disturbing the Peace." It was articulated by the News and Features editors of the 1995-96 term.

Here is the first editorial in the magazine-type collection written by then Editor in Chief Ibarra Medina Gutierrez.

The College Folio
(1910-1913)

One cornerstone of the contemporary Philippine Collegian includes the College Folio (1910), the first school paper in the Philippines to be published, with Victoriano Yamzon as its first editor. In its maiden editorial, the College Folio espoused the privileging of English, thus responding to the question of what the country should choose as the official language. Citing that progress could only be possible with a virile and forceful language, the Folio sought to develop a taste for English literature among University students.

Patterned after the University of Chicago Magazine and the Michicgan Alumnus, the College Folio's 4-3/4 by 9-3/4 in. had 40 pages and sold for 30 centavos a copy, with a yearly subscription rate of one peso. Funding for the College Folio came mainly from the pockets of the College of Liberal Arts and College of Engineering students, and when the students' pockets eventually gave way after three years, so did the College Folio.

The Varsity News
(1917-1922)

Four years after the College Folio's demise came another cornerstone, the Varsity News. With Carlos P. Romulo as its first editor, the Varsity News was not limited to the publication of literary works. It filled the front page of its four-paged 11 by 17 in. sheets with news items, coming out as often as three times a week. The Varsity News was enlarged to full-tabloid size one year after its publication but in the tradition of the Folio before it, the Varsity News discontinued printing in the face of financial difficulties.
