Sports for Cerebral Palsy is a year round training program designed for athletes with physical disabilites to develop sports skils, improve physical and mental fitness as well as providing an atmosphere of individual and team goal setting.

The program seeks to enhance general physical fitness of the athletes who is physically disabled through adaptive physical exercise. It is also recreational with fun experiences designed to improve the individual's self-esteem. Local team training with opporunity to travel to local, regional, national, and international, meets can be realized.

The philosophy of this program empasized: 'Sports by Ability, Not Disablity'. The Program is based upon a philosophy that the act of competition is essential to the total development of any person and that involvement in individual and team sporting events can teach a person humility and pride and intill a sense of self worth and respect for others. The Program's purpose is to provide an opportunity for ahtletes:

  • To learn or improve on individual and team sports
  • To increase functional abilities
  • To learn cooperation in the attainment of a common goal
  • To improve self-confience

Basic sports skills and concepts will be taught both on an individual and team basis. Sports proposed will include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:

  • Wheelchair Soccer Team
  • Ambulatory soccer
  • Track and Field Event
  • Boccia
  • Cross Country
  • Bowling
  • Swimming
  • Cycling

The program is designed for those with cerebral palsy and other physical disabilities who are not appropriate for Special Olympics. Furthermore, it is a joint Program between Jackson County Speical Recreation and Open Opitons Inc.-United Cerebral Palsy Association for greater Kansas City.

Team sessions are offered in different sites in Jackson County, Missouri. Team training is offered for two, non-consecutive fifteen-week sessions throughout each year. Training sessions are open to persons eight years or older, and who reside in the Greater Kansas City area. The program is run under the rules and guidelines of the United States Cerebral Palsy Ahtletic Association (U.S.C.P.A.A).

Training sessions are open to person eight years and older who have mild to severe cerebral palsy and who reside in the Greater Kansas City area. The training program is also for athletes who are not not eligible to participate in one of the other national sports programs for physically challenged persons. Eligibility conditions include multiple sclerosis, musclar dystrophy, arthogyropos, imperfecta, Fridreich's Ataxia, hemipareses, and dwarfism.
