Chapter sixty six

Zac stirred as the nurse gently shook him.

"Wake up kiddo."

His eyes opened sticky, and it took him a minute to wake completely.

"Dr. says he's ready to take that out for you."

Zac nodded.

"Kay what I need you to do is sit up. I'll help you alright."

He nodded again, then used the nurses assistance to sit up.

He realized how much it really did hurt when he got to a fully seated position.

His lower back had to be the worst, it ached and the pain shot up through the rest of his back.

The doctor stood on one side while the nurse rested one hand on Zac's back.

"It's not going to feel great, but what I'm going to do is turn off the machine, and when I say, I want you to breath out alright? We're gonna pull."

He nodded as a flicker of fear flashed on his face.

"Okay, ready."

She placed one hand on the tube and switched the machine off.

"Kay."

She pulled as he exhaled and dropped the tube on the bed as Zac coughed and choked.

"There! All done! Wasn't too hard was it."

Zac took deep breaths and closed his eyes.

She smiled at him and walked from the room.

Zac lay back down. Feeling as though he couldn't get enough air, he lay panting.

The nurse entered again, carrying a glass of water and ice.

"Here ya go."

She handed the glass to him as he slowly swallowed a sip.

She took the glass again from him and set it on the table.

She smiled and turned, walking to the door.

He couldn't talk real well, his throat was sore and dry.

"Where's my mom?"

She paused and turned around.

"She hasn't gotten back yet alright."

He nodded.

Driffting back asleep he talked to himself. Hearing his own voice was a relief.

Taylor had never found a real comfort in anything food wise, or drink wise. He hadn't ever thought of it. Right now though, despite the way in which his stomach was pitching and tossing at the sound, he would try anything.

Dorin and Isaac sat on the sofa, looking down on his body stretched out along the floor.

He hadn't thought about anything but. Mercy meant the world to him and he was finding it difficult to believe that he just now realized how much he had loved her. He almost believed he hadn't been hit by the reality of the accident. Only because he wasn't feeling anything quite yet. He felt numb, that was all, but there was no emptyness yet, no pain so extreme he couldn't top it. There was just a blank space, where something had been, something un-recognizable and dull. He hated that void, that black hole where he felt nothing, and it bothered him and upset him. He missed Mercy.

Jeremy walked in from the kitchen.

A bottle of some brand hard liquor in one hand and a shot glass in the other.

Walking to Taylor, Jeremy sat down by his head.

Sitting Indian style, the bottle between his legs, he set the shot glass down in front of him.

Twisting the cap from the bottle, he lifted it and poured.

Resting the cap back on the neck of the bottle, he lifted the glass.

"Tay open up."

He waited for Taylor to open up and he poured the liquid into his mouth.

Taylor winced at the sharp taste but swallowed, licking his lips.

Jeremy poured another shot and repeated the process.

After 4 shots, Jeremy had put the glass aside and stood, telling Dorin and Isaac to assist him in putting Taylor to bed_in Zac's room.

With the help of all three, Taylor was tucked under the covers, shoes off, and eyes heavily closing.

"Leave him till morning."

Dorin stepped out into the hall and sat down on the steps.

He placed his head in his hands and sighed.

The death of their sister, and the probable death of their younger brother had hit them. Hit them hard and had not let up. The thought was always in their minds, not letting up and not ever showing a light, only proving to be stressful and sickening.

The way Mercy had died had been horrible, but the reports said she died on contact, Arianna however had been trapped for almost a half an hour. What a horrible way to die.

However they did not cry. Did not mention all of this and lastly, did not stare blankly at a wall.

They had taken it quite well actually, no one broke down, no one went into hysterics. The staff on call at the hospital had questioned their reasoning, but when Dorin replied that, they had loved her then, but what to do now, they had simply forgiven the thought and gone on with their business.

Jeremy would never cry for his sister, because she meant a lot to him, he would mourn her, he would feel pain, but most likely he would bury it. He hurt, and locking it up wasn't the greatest way to help it, but he knew that she didn't want him to cry over her.

She was a strong person, he would miss her greatly, and they had had several fun and wonderful times together. All of them imprinted deeply in his mind now.

And they had two albums to remember the attitude, the voice, and the career part of her. They had pictures and interview tapes and videos to remember her face. And they would of course have the memories to remember her.

Dorin took it fairly well. He wanted to cry, wanted to pour out everything. He just might he thought, as he sat on the steps, after taking a soon to be drunk Taylor Hanson and putting him to bed.

He not only lost his sister, but a great singer and band mate, and mostly a good friend.

He would miss her also.

Zac was in a corner of his mind also though. Although there was much more hope in Dorin's mind, then there was in every doctor that saw him, and now, after today, he would focus any hope and love he had toward his brother. He needed it, and Zac could use all the help he could get.

He stood again, following Jeremy and Isaac down the steps to the living room again.

Isaac stumbled on the last step and tripped, landing on his knees and hands.

He stayed there for a moment, but stood again, tears streaming down his cheeks.

"Isaac, you okay?"

Dorin was truly concerned he had hurt himself.

Isaac fell once more and sat in a heap on the floor.

"Ike!"

Dorin bent over to help him up but Isaac pushed him away.

"Isaac!?"

He wiped the tears from his face and looked at the floor.

"It's all me Dorin."

Dorin shook his head.

"Isaac you weren't the one driving the_."

"I was the whole reason they went to the hospital."

Dorin frowned.

"What?"

Isaac covered his face with his hand.

"They were coming from the hospital."

"Isaac what are you talking about?"

"Zac and I_I hit Zac_I hurt him pretty bad and_and_Mercy took him to the_"

"You hit Zac? Isaac why?"

He shook his head.

"I can't explain it_but it's my fault Dorin."

Dorin kneeled down beside Isaac.

"It's not your fault Isaac_"

"It is!!"

"No Isaac, you couldn't have known, you couldn't have it had nothing to do with you and Zac.."

"They wouldn't have gone_"

"Isaac. I don't care. It happened, and you couldn't have done a thing about it."

"It's me thou_"

"ISAAC!"

Isaac started crying again and Dorin reached over to him.

"It wasn't you alright."

Diana walked into the room, a smile on her face and a bag in her hand.

"Guess what hon."

He shrugged.

His throat still hurt and his head was feeling a headache.

"I brought you something."

She held up the paper bag.

"What?"

He croaked out, managing to look interested now.

She set the bag down on the bed and pulled it open.

Reaching inside she pulled out a nintendo and a few games.

He smiled big and giggled.

"I know you aren't really into all this stuff much anymore, but you do spend some time still on it, and so I thought that since you were stuck here, you could do this, instead of being bored."

She smiled as she set a controller on the bed.

As she did, his smile began to fade.

"Mom?"

She looked up, and, seeing him not smiling, she rested her hands down on the bed along with the game.

"Yes?"

He looked down at the game and then back up at her.

"Mom, they won't tell me what happened."

She swallowed hard and sighed.

"Zac, maybe we should_"

"Mom."

She smiled uneasily.

"Mom what happened."

She sighed again and raised a shaking hand to her temple.

"Zac not rig_"

"MOM!"

She drew back at his cry and rested her hand on the bed again.

"Mercy and Arianna didn't make it."

Zac's face went pale and he blinked.

"What do you mean? They were right there! Right?! She was just driving!"

Diana nodded and closed her eyes.

"Arianna too?"

"Yes Zac."

He looked over at the door.

"Poor Tay. God. Mom this is_is awful."

She sighed and nodded.

He looked up abruptly and stared at her.

Knowing the look on his face, she broke into a hurt expression and sucked in breath in jerky motions.

"He's not alright Zac."

Zac started breathing hard. Closing his eyes he bit his lip and swallowed.

"As of now he's in a serious coma, and he's on life support."

Zac's breathing picked up pace and he squeezed his eyes shut harder.

"The doctors believe that he's_he's dying on them Zac."

He gritted his teeth balled his fists.

He threw his head back and growled angrily.

"MY GOD!!!!!"

Diana jumped back as her son yelled out.

"Zac I_"

"GOD! WHY HIM?? HE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING!!"

The pain in his throat didn't stop him from yelling and even though it ached and burned, he couldn't help it.

He pounded the bed with his fists.

"GOD DAMNIT!"

Diana held back tears, and covered her mouth.

"Mom please."

She nodded and began walking to the door of the room.

"Mom I'm sorry. Just. Maybe later alright."

She nodded without looking at him and stepped out, shutting the door behind her.
