Chapter four

Zac shivered.

Even if it was summer in Tulsa, it could still get cold.

His eyes keenly popped open and he sat up, the blanket Kate had loaned him was doubled up and wrapped tightly around him. Still, he shivered.

Tonight's hours had been extremely frustrating. He would drift to sleep, only to be awakened again by a stiff neck or more coldness.

Kate had so kindly offered him the backseat of her truck for the night. It wasn't real big, matter of fact, no 15 year old, heck, no 10 year old should have had to squeeze himself into the backseat of Kate's truck, even in desperation.

But indeed, Zac had been desperate.

Looking out the windshield of the car, he noticed everything was dark, black, like some horror novel, and he was one of those victims that was about to be sprung upon by an ugly, bozo looking clown named IT, or some guy wearing a ski mask and swinging a rather large gun.

But there was none, only the movement of trees as the wind gently and silently whipped about them.

"I can't believe she did that."

Zac shook his head, his words coming out in chatters, and whispering.

He really, honestly couldn't believe his own mother had kicked him out, couldn't believe it at all. That wasn't like her at all.

Scrapping his mind for what the whole situation might bring, he shrugged.

"She'll let me back in. And if she doesn't, I'll just tag along with one of the guys. Heck, if your going to be in a band together, you gotta be real close."

Zac's voice trailed off as he said the last words.

The truth of the matter was, that he and his highschool band were about as good of friends as they were going to get, and the thought of any of their parents actually alowing another member to just climb on for the ride was pretty much…out of the question.

Zac had joined the band as a freshman, there were 3 other guys, all of them had known eachother since the early years, whatever that was.

After Zac and his brothers had seemingly dispersed, moving away from eachother, it made it kind of hard to carry on their band now didn't it. If you don't talk to your lead singer, you can't get much done.

Oh well, he thought. He had been with his brothers' band long enough to learn to play the drums and play them well, so now, he'd decided to put that talent to use. No sense in letting it set on a shelf getting dusty.

Zac sighed, shrugged and lay back down.

All of his boxes were stuffed, more like crammed, into the back of Kate's truck, waiting for a place to be unloaded.

"I'll find something tomorrow."

Zac nodded and closed his eyes.

"Tomorrow."

Isaac woke up groggily at precisely 10:05 am.

Stumbling out of his room and down the stairs, he walked into the living room to find his girlfriend, sitting cross legged on the living room sofa, reading a book and watching opra at the same time.

"Goooood morning."

She gave him a cheery smile as she looked up.

"Why are you so perky?"

She shrugged and smiled wider.

"Oh I don't know. Just because today is today."

Isaac looked around the living, then glanced back into the hallway.

Their apartment wasn't real big, it did however, have to levels, one bedroom downstairs, where they mostly stored things, and one upstairs. Their room.

She stifled a chuckle.

"No need to worry just yet Mr. Hanson, your little brother hasn't arrived yet."

She sighed and turned back to her book.

Isaac frowned and walked to the kitchen. He didn't like how she had just decided Zac should stay here. Didn't like it one bit. And he and Zac didn't get along anyway! That was what made him angry, did she not realize there were serious problems here?

Reaching for a cupboard door, he pulled it open, retrieving a glass.

Opening the refrigerator, he grabbed the milk and set it on the counter.

Tammy walked into the kitchen, stopping right behind Isaac, she wrapped her arms around his waist.

"I can make some breakfast."

Isaac shrugged.

"Oh c'mon."

He sighed.

"You really don't get it do you?"

She frowned.

"Ike, things gotta change."

He went to respond, but was stopped by her lips.

When she had finished, she stood back, admiring Isaac's look of astonishment.

"What was that for?"

"For being you I guess."

He smiled abruptly.

"Oh, well, how bout more for being me again?"

She leaned foreward and kissed him again, this time taking longer.

Grinning wide now, Isaac reached down and grabbed her hand.

"Lets forget breakfast."

He led her up the stairs giggling.

"Mom!!"

"No! I told you once and I…"

"Mom you can't do that!!!!"

"Oh really? I'm your mother, I can do it if I see fit!"

"It's MY house TOO! You can't just throw me out!"

"I believe I just did."

"MOTHER!"

"Do not raise your voice Zac. This is final. Maybe you'll learn to appreciate what you have a little more now."

"Damnit mom stop this!!!!"

"I already told you my verdict. Find somewhere else to live."

"Jesus Chr…"

Click.

Diana sighed. Light tremors shook her hands and she was about to cry.

"No, no I won't. No I can't, he needs to learn this lesson."

She sniffed.

Avery walked into the kitchen.

"What's the matter mom?"

Diana inhaled deeply.

"Absolutly nothing hun, nothing at all."

Taylor stretched out, his sheets crumpled down at his feet.

Stretching, so that everything in his body felt elongated, he sighed.

"Yeaahhhh that feels good."

He looked up at the window. The only window in his room, but it was big enough to allow the perfect amount of light. It was a beautiful day, he could tell. He still had his clothes on, as far as he could remember, he had gotten home around three in the morning, and had gone immediately to bed. He could hear Brent's soft snorring on the sofa.

He had clicked through the channels on the television last night, finding nothing of real interest, except Saturday night live making fun of some new singer.

The hours, minutes, had ticked by that night, seeming to never end.

Taylor had watched as, person after person passed out, collapsed, slept, at the party last night. It had been interesting, and all so he could drive Brent home. Such a life eh?

Ah well. He was hungry now, and that was all that mattered.

Getting up, he walked to the door of his room, and out into the living room.

Brent was sleeping quite soundly, and Taylor chuckled as he remembered the extreme difficulties getting him to the car.

Walking to the kitchen, he searched the cupboard and found some instant oatmeal.

"Looks like a buffet to me."

Taylor ripped open the packet and poured it into a bowl.

"Yummy!"

He joked, pouring a little water in the bowl, then shoving it into the microwave. Pushing the buttons, he waited 3 minutes while the oatmeal swelled inside.

"Well. Mr. Brent sir, I think you need to get up."

He walked to the front door and opened it, allowing the sun to shine directly on his friend.

"All in good time my boy…all in good time."

"Damnit!"

Zac paced Kate's room, and then sat, waited for a moment, then repeated the whole process over.

"What the hell am I gonna do?!"

Kate watched on as he yelled and sighed, cussing and kicking things.

"I don't have ANY place to go!"

"What about Scott? I'm sure he's…"

"I already called him."

She shrugged.

"Zac babes, I don't really know what to tell you alright? I really don't. What about your brothers?"

Zac stopped in his track. Spinning around to face her he scowled.

"Don't ever bring them up."

She drew back, frowning.

"Fuck you Zac!"

He threw himself on the bed beside her.

"Godamnit I'm only giving you fucking ideas! You jump all over me? You can find yourself a place to live!"

She folded her arms over her chest.

"Sorry."

"Yeah you are. Sorry as a damn street dog."

"You know what I think of Ta…"

"Yeah I do. But maybe just once in your life you two could shut the hell up and give eachother some support."

"Yeah well…"

"Yeah nothing. And weren't you supposed to go to Ike's place this week anyway? Go there, I'm sure you can work something out with Tammy. She likes you don't she? She'll do something I'm sure."

"Kate I…"

She pitched the phone in his lap.

"No way."

"Fucking call now."

Zac was about to toss the phone around the room when Kate slugged him on the shoulder.

"Damn you it's a place to live!"

Zac swallowed hard.

Picking up the phone he began to dial.

"You're gonna pay for this Kate..."

He silenced as the phone began to ring.

"You'll thank me…"

Zac frowned, sighed, and swallowed hard.

Tammy picked up the phone.

"Hello?"

Sighing once more, Zac began.

"Hi…uh…Tammy…."
