Fortune Village on Nov 30th, 1996:
Finally, after weeks and weeks of touring all across the Labelle's basement, we realized our dream, to play a battle of the bands on top of a Chinese food restaurant. We entered the arena(hall), which was full of dozens of other mighty combatants(bands) and set our eyes upon the stage that we would manifest in only hours.
As our entanglement came closer, we were called to showcase our talent in a duel of sound(checks). We unleashed "Guilt Trip" on the overseer of the tournament, one Mr. Gary.
As we finished, the five of us(Ahmed, Mat, Mike, Mat, and Nate) headed over to thee local McDonald's for a nice late afternoon of dinner and dancing(sadly, the dinner was small, and the dancing didn't pan out.) Around this time, we all started to get very nervous, because we knew our time was coming. This was the night that would determine our fate.
Eventually, the time came for Fink to go on, which meant we would have to enter the room adjacent to the stage(backstage), the last stop before we would have to pour our souls out in front of millions and millions(500 hundred) of bloodthirsty teenagers. An extreme bout of nervousness came over us and a select few urinated in a vase(which we found out was quite used to urination at the time!). Finally, four sweaty teenage girls entered the room,(which went somehow unnoticed!?!) and signaled us to go on. There was indeed, no turning back.
We first appealed to the crowd with "Bonus" which seemed to win us some favor. Our first stage appearance though, was almost our last. During a song, a mighty projectile(beer bottle) was hurled in Nate's direction. He managed to escape it's wrath, but Ahmed's amp was not so fortunate. The bottle crashed against the amp, and in the process spilled beer all over it. This was the end of Ahmed for the night, he finished the set, quietly strumming in the corner. Well, it seems the powers that be had taken one of us out, but who would be next? Apparently nobody. We ended the set with Figure-8.
Afterwards, he descended the stairs and awaited the love and adoration of the common folk,(whether or not it came is debatable). We were congratulated by Jenn from Fink, to which Mike replied "*#%$ you." or something to that effect. We anxiously awaited the end of the night, to see who would become champion of the "R.O.R. Battle Of The Bands". When the results came, tragedy struck, we had been bested by Subdominant and Purple Slush. The night though, will go down as the single most important night in the history of rock music.
