ACT II A new life... America has provided the immigrants so much joy, even if their life is filled with hard work. Karl-Oskar celebrates the building of his new house. Ulrika is there, and Danjel and other Swedes. They all feel that they took the right decision when they decided to move to America. Everyone but Kristina. She is homesick and long for her family and the country she has left behind. She loves her husband but ask God to bring her back.

Karl-Oskar has noticed that Kristina isn´t happy. He tries to remind her of the things they left behind: poverty, the meaningless struggle for survival. They still need to struggle, but they have a much better chance to survive and make a small profit from their harvest. Kristina asks Karl-Oskar if he ever misses the what they have left behind and he answers her by showing her Anna´s shoes, he has kept them since she died.

Karl-Oskar also tries to cheer Kristina up by telling her that they´ll give their new home the name New Duvemåla and he is going to plant an Astrakanappletree for her, the same sort they have in Sweden. Kristina is feeling a bit better, her love to Karl-Oskar is great and she knows that God will help her through this. But her heart will always ache when she is thinking of her old home where the evenings are so bright even in the early Springtime.

Karl-Oskar is a very proud and hard-working man and become furious when he is accused of stealing the land he owns from the Indians. The Indians aren´t very happy with the way they have been treated, but so far they are kept calm.

Robert is returning from the goldfields and he is returning as a broken man, desillusionazied and ill with the yellow fever. He tells Kristina his story, he has been chasing a dream and woke up to the brutal reality, one can not change ones destiny. He has lost his friend and he has finally come to peace with his fate. He has made a lot of money from the years on the golden trail but it turns out that he has been cheated. The money he has are false.

Robert wanders off to the forest to the creek, and when they find him, he is dead, only 22 years old.

Ulrika is a new woman. She has been re-born and keeps her head high. She and Kristina are the best of friends now and Ulrika is going to marry the Reverend Jackson. Kristina is very happy for her friend and congratulates her.

Kristina gets a miss-carriage one day, and it turns out that the hard work and the births of 7 children has made her fragile and weak. Next pregnancy might cost her her life. Karl-Oskar tries to comfort her, but now she is beyond comfort. She feels like the one she has trusted all her life has betrayed her, for the first time in her life she asks herself the question, if God really exists. She is alone under the stars and tries to sort out her emotions, it can´t be true. Who is going to take care of her if God doesn´t exist. He must exist! But the doubts over-whelms her for a moment. She has lost her child, her home and now she is forced to stay away from her husband. Has no one heard her prayers!?

The Astrakanappletree has blossomed three Springs without giving them any fruit. But this year is a good year, it seems to finally be able to give Kristina her beloved apples. Kristina is feeling better after a while. Her strength is almost back. But she misses Karl-Oskar, and one day she decides to put her life into Gods hands. She convinces Karl-Oskar that God will take care of her no matter what. They can´t affect what is going to happen, because it is meant to happen.

Kristina is pregnant again and she is trying her best to take away the guilt Karl-Oskar feels. He is blaming himself to much and Kristina realizes that nothing she says helps. At the same time the Indians are in rage and has attacked several immigrantfamilies.

The Astrakan is finally giving fruit, but the houses at Lake Ki-Chi-Saga are empty because the Indians are now close. No one is there to pick the apples, but Karl-Oskar. He has stayed at his wifes bed. She has high fever and she is deep in her feverslumber. But suddenly she wakes up and she tells Karl-Oskar not to worry. They´ll meet again after death! She will be waiting for him in Duvemåla Meadow. Karl-Oskar gives her the first apple from the tree, but she is to tired to take a bite. But she smells it, it smells like home...Kristina fall asleep again and dies in the arms of her beloved Karl-Oskar. They´ll meet again. Her life is completed.
