On Friday, May 8, 1998, St. Joseph's College School held its annual talent night, which showcases talents from both St. Joseph's College School and St. Michael's Choir School. Auditions for the event took place weeks before the finaly display. Many acts tried out for a position but few were chosen. A band named Angel Dust was one of the chosen few. After last years failed attempt to capture a coveted spot, they were extremely content with this years great success.
Overall, I view Java Jam Night as a total success. The acts were well rehearsed and the show was well organized. But the night did start off on a sour note. Instead of the doors opening at 7:00 pm, they opened at 7:30 pm, the scheduled starting of the show. Our table was pretty well situated, it was a little far back from the stage but there was a clear view of the stage. We didn't have any of those things, i dunno, leave me alone. Well, back to what i was saying, i asked the waiter dude to bring us those paper things, but of cours0e he did not, but i forgave him and gave him a 10 cent tip...hey, what can i say, im a good person..teehee. So,i got my free "Second Cup" coffee, so I can't complain.
Now, im gonna talk a little about the acts. It started off with this one chick singing a Celine Dion song, let me tell you this one bit of info, i dont personally enjoy Celine Dions music, but this chick sounded amazing and way better then Celine Dion herself. Moving on, have way through the show, the announcers, who were presidents of SJCS and SMChoirS, announced that this dude was gonna come out and sing opera, and that everyone should be quiet because he does not have a mic. So, im like, OK, opera, that's pretty wicked This guy comes out, dressed in a suit thing and this hat. And he starts to sing. Whoa, it was so beautiful, i started to cry. I don't know why i do this, but its things like that that make me cry, eg.violins, those are the worst. But seriously, this guy was amazing. The other acts were good too. Ok, this is for Sandra, who was Baby Spice in the Spice Girl Act. They were good, Sandra was the best, except when like the music was shut off, hahahaha.
Finally, the MAIN FOCUS of this article, Angel Dust. Introduced by my schools(SJCS) president as one of the loudest, most talented band that both schools have to offer, Angel Dust began their set with a raucus filled rendition of Doll Parts by Hole. The beginning was a bit shakey cuz the sound guy was fucking up (dumbass), there was a little feed back, which you could tell upset Angel Dust's guitarist, Silvia Nardi, by the look of confusion on her face. After the minor setback, the riffs were amazing, Silvia was doing a damn good job. The vocals were captured with definate accuracy by Alex Suarez, an extremely talented vocalist, who managed to grasp the screaming part in Doll Parts, except for a little squeak in the first segment. Bassist, Sonneia Negovetic was actually on tune tonite, although she plays as if she isnt even really playing because she just like stands there.... but she sounded cool. Maureen Da silva , the drummer, was wicked!! Hahaha, she did her famous Drummer dance. I liked the approach that Angel Dust took during the entire set. Rather then stopping in between each song, the intertwined each melody, which gave the whole performance a very professional aura.
Doll Parts ended, and Angel Dust began their second song, which was a cover of Fleetwood Mac's Best Sunday Dress. I can't really comment that much on this song because honestly I don't know it... but hey, I'm pretty sure they played it excellently.
ANgel Dust ended off with, believe it or not, THEIR OWN SONG!!!! . It's called Mirror, Mirror and it's da bomb, haha, i said it. The vocals were totally wick, the instrumental part was crazy, and what can i say about Silvia's guitar solo, it was plain insanity. And Alex sounded really cool in this song and she like actually used the stage, unlike the other bands who just stood by the mic.
Overall, I would have to say that Angel Dust is a really wicked band. They played all their songs in a organized, professional manner. They definately didn't sound like those annoying teen bands who like act all stupid and hardcore, cuz lemme tell you peeps, Angel Dust is the real thing, not some pathetic ass poser band, theyre here to stay.
