Modern Somalia: Political and Social Aspect
Politics: Military Rule and Revolution
The original impetus for the coup came from a group of young army officers impatient with the corruption, nepotism and inefficiency of Egal's government.
But it soon became clear that the new head of state and president of the Supreme Revolutionary Council (SRC), General Mohamed Siyad Barre, commander of the army, held the reins of power firmly in his hands.
General Siyad, who, liked his personal rival, the former police commander, General Mohamed Abshir (now placed in detention) had been a police inspector during the British Military Administration, and had also, trained in Italy where he had privately studied politics.
Assisted by a council of largely civilian, technocrat-style secretaries of state, the SRC, with its 25 members drawn from the army and police ranks embarked on an energetic policy of internal administrative reform. The aim, which was popular initially, was to clean out the Augean stables, and restore Somali with a concerted onslaught, under energetic leadership, on the real enemies of progress poverty, disease and ignorance.

A battery of new measures pursued reform and galvanized the nation's energies. Military personnel, who were installed as chairmen of local revolutionary councils modeled on that in Mofadishu, replaced civilian district and provincial governors.
Unemployed unban tribal dropouts were recruited for a whole series of public work projects. The death sentence was reintroduced, to replace blood compensation (diya) paid traditionally in inter-clan feuds. This was part of a wider strategy aimed at abolishing traditional clan divisions.

Somalia: Social Aspects
The most pervasive organizational principle of traditional Somali social organization is kinship , traced patrilineally in the male line. Genealogies tracing desent (tol) from common ancestors are the bases for the division of the population into clans and sub-clans. Despite the effect in the last few decades of the increasing monetarisation of the traditional economy, and official measures designed to eradicate clan loyalties, as well as other forces for change, these ties continue to provide the individuals primary identity within the Somali nation.
The kinship unit, with which individual's identify themselves, is always relative, and varies according to the situation in which allegiance is evoked. For example, the people of Darod descent so identify themselves in opposition to Isaq, Hawiye, Dir, Didil and Rahanweyn. Within Darod, the futher divisions of Ogaden, Mijerteyn, Marrehan, Dulbahante and other clans became relevant.
Each of these clans comprise hundreds of sub-divisions which, in turn, act on occasion as separate and opposed groups. These kinships ties are, in fact, traced backwards through the individual's father, his father's, the latter's father and so on until the founding ancestors, Darod, Isaq, ect are reached.

The members of generations counted apart, as Somalis put it, provide a ready of closeness or remoteness in people's relations with each other. The term "cousins" (or a younger man addressing an older man, "uncle") is applied to all those, other than brothers, who share recognized common desert. The words "cousin" or "uncle" are also applied as a polite term of address, when speaking to an unrelated stranger. The term "jaalle","friend" , or "comrade", introduced by the Siyad regime, sought to replace this traditional usage and its associated and potentially divisive kinship connotations.

Ties with the mother's brother's clan (e.g. those between President Siyad's Marrehan and the Ogaden) are also extremely important. They have a warm, friendly character, and may be used to supplement the axiomatic solidarity based on matrilineal kinship (tol). The mother's brother's group is known as "reer Abti" being the most general term for "groups" or "people".

The Somali are traditionally polygamous, with the men marrying, according to the Islam code, a maximum of four wives at any one time. The number of wives that a man has varies generally with age: seniority is associated with more wives. The actual incidence of polygyny varies widely: both among the pastoral nomads and the southern Digil and Rahanweyn, the majority of men will probably have had at least two wives at some point in their lives.
The rich and successful man will usually have four wives. As marriage is extremely unstable, with a high frequency of divorce, the number of marriages contracted in the course of the average man's life is actually often higher than these statements would indicate.

Traditionally, medical practice also included smallpox vaccination and the isolation of the patients with disease, which were known to be infectious.
In setting this somewhat patchy indigenous heritage in perspective, it should also be remembered, as the explorer Richard Burton recorded in 1885, hat Somalis know that mosquitoes carried malaria before this was discovered by Western science.
The success of more recent mass vaccination and inoculation schemes are, however, examples of an application of modern primary health care methodologies. Which add usefulness of traditional knowledge.

Another important aspect of tradition is that Somalis attach great importance to oratory and poetry. It is in these fields, rather in the plastic arts, which are little developed, that Somali culture's most impressive achievements are to be found.
This corresponds to the nomadic aspects of the culture of a people used to travelling light, with few materials encumbrances but a richly compensating gift of language. Somalis are born talkers.
Every elder is expected to be able to hold an audience for hours on end, with a speech richly laced by judicious proverbs and quotations from famous poems and sayings. Similarly, if he is to command respect, he should also be capable, not only of composing striking impromptu verse in the various traditional styles, but also of reciting the classic works of famous authors.
As, until the mass literacy campaigns of 1972 and 1974, this oral heritage was not preserved in writing, it implied prodigious powers of memory.

These skills indeed, among the most striking characteristics of the Somali nomad, whose formidable stores of knowledge makes some elders seem like walking encyclopaedias.
Although knowledge is primarily local, Somalis are also keenly interested in the world news, although they often and interpret it somewhat ethnocentrically .They are true radio enthusiasts, with an apparently insatiable appetite for broadcasts.

Somalis are appreciative of the efforts of foreigners to master their language, but their pleasure is tinged with deeply ingrained suspicions. Despite their strong sentiments of national self-esteem, they wish to guard the secrets of their culture, and only to share them on their own terms, as they choose.
As generosity, especially in receiving guests, is also highly valued and a source of pride, the stranger often encounters conflicting attitudes in his hosts. This guarded approach to the outside world, coupled with a politician's gift for seizing the advantage, makes the Somalis formidable adversaries.
These qualities among the nomads are combined with an aggressive self-confidence and, traditionally, open contempt for other people. This is closely bound up with the nomad's sense of independence and defiant scorn for those who seek to impose their dominion upon him. Displays of superior force earn only temporary resect as these most ungovernable bide their time. The reputation of each man being own sultan suggests that would be a leader may argue with them or cajole, but cannot securely command. Connecting with this is a certain lack of predictability in routine situations.

CURRENT ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION IN SOMALIA
WATER Drinking water comes mainly from natural lakes, streams, rivers and water falls. These are, however, mostly unhygienic. People and their cattle heads fetch from these water resources simultaneously. In fact, this community suffer from various environmental disastrous which are all harm and hazardous to human health. Both diffuse and domestic pollution of air, water and land devastated the territory. Degradation and depletion of all renewable and non-renewable natural resources such as rapid deforestation, soil erosion, fire and occupational hazards are the main sources of pollution therein.

Besides this, there is migration or repugnance refuge manner, that is moving from town to town, town to city, city town, and rural to rural without knowing precisely where are they going to and why to go. This ruthless movement and lack of settlement causes over population in some small areas, in some times, where they gather in every where that they hear there is possibility or better opportunity for life.

FOREST Forestry and vegetation in Somalia consists chiefly of coarse grass, and stunted thorn and acacia trees. Trees producing the aromatic resins frankincense and myrah are indigenous to the mountain slopes, as other kinds of timber are available mainly around the river areas. Every part of the land is famous of certain kinds of trees and grasses. For instance, in the south there are eucalyptus, euphoria, palm leaves, timber, and mahogany trees.

Severe deforestation was caused by illegal logging, mining, firewood, fire, and famine which affect unimaginably. Though most of these activities are done for life earning purpose - just to get daily bread, many runs under careless and negligence. Moreover, it may be destroyed for cruelty or playing. For life purpose, they use it for cooking, warming, housing, furniture, and many other purposes.
It is not surprising one not to find any instrument or tool for any use other than that made of wood. Selfish groups who hierarchically use the trees for profit making cut millions or, at least, thousands of trees of rainforest to export them to the Gulf regions particularly.

It is miscellaneous history to hear that in this century energy consumption of one country is entirely depend on woods. Almost 100% of Somalian energy used is firewood and charcoal not only for cooking merely, but for all life earnings and utilization. All biomes such as; palms, leaves, straw and dung are eagerly and greedily used in the country.
Notwithstanding, draughts and rain shortage, in some areas, where there is temporary security, or at least, are surrounded by tribal militiamen women and children spend over days and more time searching for charcoal. Donkeys, Camel males, and Carts are some times brought into help bringing the firewood.
As a result of this purpose and some other minor purposes strikes deforestation, climate change and human density. Only two decades ago, almost half of Somalian earth was covered by forest. However, today this forest is under threat by rapid deforestation caused by famine, war, illegal and ruthless logging and, agricultural practice which is st ill under the early stage of human lifestyle.

In many areas woodland cannot be degenerated due to the most of the biggest trees are already taken out that made the spread of tree cutting in the land scope a sign of the intensity of destruction. All in all, Somalian forest lays under inadvertent campaign of devastation. It is extremely used for cooking charcoal, firewood, local construction as sheltering and shrine, greediness export, and arming. Another repugnant and harsh problem that usually face the forest is to be burned by cruelty.

when tribal militiamen capture any area which is not belong to them they simply put a fire into the whole or least half of the area for some unnecessary purposes that based on enmity purposes like to avoid any possible hidden attack against themselves, to bogg-down the future economical life for the legal residents, to light in the dark times, to warm themselves, to shield themselves with it, to discover whatever inside the jungles and even just for playing and jokes.
Surprisingly, a Somali man hav e to hold a peace of stick or clap in his hand, in any circumstances. That is what they call "Bakorad or ul", and to prepare such kind of sticks they must cut many trees to select one.
