Now, for a little discussion on the ruler of Planet Doom. Zarkon is a pretty easily misunderstood guy. Yeah, he seems to care for no one, but if you were the most hated man in the universe, I bet you'd act the same way. I suppose if he cared enough, he'd pretend not to care at all.
Zarkon is testy the majority of the time and he has a great deal of trouble accepting failure, even going so far as to threaten to kill his own son on numerous occasions.
It was rumored before that his wife was human; this has never been proven nor disproven. . . . It was also rumored that he and Witch Haggar were an item at one point of time, probably just to use her for her power. Then there's the fact that no one really knows how old Zarkon is, but it is widely known that he needs the flowers of Lyra to prolong his life.
All Zarkon wants is total conquest of the Universe and to destroy Voltron. Zarkon also killed King Alfor, Princess Allura's father, in a sword duel at the Valley of Zohar on Planet Arus.

"Haggar is Zarkon's right hand witch. Her dark magical powers are used to infuse regular Robeasts with magic in order for them to grow and wreak havic throughout the Universe. Once she was a beautiful woman and was supposedly Zarkon's mistress until a horrible accident occured. King Zarkon wanted nothing more than to destroy Voltron, and Haggar being so close to him would do anything in her power to help him. He managed to talk her into disguising herself as a beautiful Space Goddess to lure Voltron into a trap. ( This was the first Voltron Force, the one appointed by King Alfor ). The plan worked, spliting Voltron into five lions, but Haggar was burnt so badly from the blast that she was horrible to look at. But these qualities are used for evil. It is portrayed that he is a true conqurer and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. This includes Princess Allura. Even from the first day of their meeting he has been trying to capture her. First, to make her his slave, but he later changes his mind that he wants to marry her. It seems that the prince struggles with himself at times, especially if the situation happens to involve the princess.
When we first meet him, it is right after Yurak (the Commander at that time) gets a chewing out by Zarkon and is ready to be exiled. Lotor "saves" him by coming up with a plan to turn him into a Robeast, but that doesn't last long. Yurak is defeated in battle by Voltron of course. And this is when he sees Allura for the first time (and meets his soon to be arch enemy, Captain Keith, also). He utterly hates Keith and his father (so we are made to believe. Keep reading DODW for my own variation of their relationship :).)

He couldn't seem to do anything right. He did manage to defeat several small planets at the beginning of his Commandership, but he quickly began to lose favor with the King. Yurak wanted nothing more than to see the entire Voltron Force blown to smitherens but he just couldn't seem to do it. He also hated, and I do mean HATED, having to work with Witch Haggar. He was always yelling at her sayng that, 'I don't need your magic powers, Old Witch!'. But in the end, it may have been better if he had cooperatied with her.
Yurak was exiled by King Zarkon only to be turned into a Robeast at the Prince's request. And he lost. Thus, Prince Lotor took over the position of Commander In-Chief of the Doomite Forces."

After Lotor lost favor in his father's eyes, the king called upon this man to command his vast forces. He is ever the comical releaf of the Doomies. He's even more of an idiot than Yurak was ten times over but a much nicer one. And he befriended the Old Witch well enough. He and Haggar always seem to get stuck on a mission together; always following the prince around. But sooner or later, the prince took back control of the forces and he and Cossack became friends. Lotor also apointed Cossack his General/Commander. The Commander likes to call himself "Cossack the Terrible". He never really won any battles, but hey, at least he's still alive."
