The Results from the 2000 Bernie and Lee Leonard Tournament

2000 Mary Queen of Peace coached by T.J. Siebeman, became one of the few coaches to win both the boy’s and girl’s championship at the Gabriel’s tourney as MQP beat Our Lady of Sorrows in a close final with Sorrow’s missing a three pointer at the buzzer. The game was low scoring as MQP opened a solid third quarter lead as Meggie Kennedy, Stephanie Manuel, Cindy Finney and Jamie Hoberg led the way. But Sorrows fought back with the aid of Francine Caputa, Katie Scannell and Jess Herman to keep the score close and losing on the final shot of the game. OLS went on to be the runner-up in closed division at the Archdiocesan Playoffs. A tall St. Catherine beat a short-handed Assumption team in overtime 36-30 for third place. Kay Stewart (16 points) and Julie Monda paced St. Catherine despite the 14 points scored by Megan Ford. St. Michael’s won the consolation championship over the St. Gabriel’s sixth grade girls a late entry in the field of sixteen.
