Stepping Stone

I realize lately
That many people use me
And have done all my life
To feel better about themselves
Or borrow a sympathetic ear
Or gain a friend
And once whatever wound
Real or imagined
That they had finally healed
They no longer needed me
And cast me aside
But really I hold no ill will
Should I?
What would it accomplish?
Friends I have grown apart from
People I thought were friends
Beings I thought were people
I loved them all once
And perhaps a part of me loves them still
They may as well get it from me
They don't seem to get it from any other source
And will not be a fountain unto themselves
Let them use me for a step up
And then forget me
I know my own worth
What do I care that they choose not to see it?
