Hailing from St. Louis, Phat N' A. Kan is currently a
7 peice untraditional ska band. From funk to punk to
hardcore ska, the band has come far from playing
Reel Big Fish and Sublime covers to writing, playing
and producing there own demo's.
Back in the summer of ‘97, Phat front men
Brett Martin(vocals) and Jeff Diebel(guitar) came up
with the idea of starting a ska band. Soon to follow
was the always loud, always funny Adam Kinney(drums).
While sitting in their dorm room at marching band camp,
Brett and Adam came up with the name Phat N'A. Kan.
Later Bryan "Bink" Davidson(bass) and Matt Strauman(trumpet)
joined in on the fun. After some practice they gained
a new trumpet player Paul Trupka(strauman move to T-Bone).
Their first show was at a party in Paul's girlfriends
basement, and it was pretty lame! Soon after Strauman
caught wind that the band wanted to kick him out
(he couldn't play T-Bone) he left. Joining the ranks
soon after Chris Fundakowski(sax) and the almighty
Dr. K. (T-Bone). After a lot of practice and a lot
of lame parties, Phat N'A. Kan was ready to play a
real show at St. Johns! May 1st, 1998 the band debuted
there 8 songs of wonder for a sellout crowd. Soon after
a recording oppertunity came up that Brett and Adam
couldn't pass up on. Recorded in Eric Peterson's basement,
their 8 song demo was a hit (for those who actually got it!)
With show's at Sassafras, and a show with Georgia's
own Skadaddles. Sadly though, Paul, Bryan and Dr. K.
had to go to college. BUT DON'T WORRY!!! Their replacements
weren't hard to find, Jared(trumpet), BOZ!!!!(bass)
and Corolla Lola(T-Bone) joined the ranks. Recording one
new song and remixing a cover, and playing a show at
The West household. Soon After, We got to working on
a 13 song power set and started to refine them. Our
big debut for the New material was Jan. 15, 1999 at
St. Johns. Our Record Label presidents band opened
up for us, and so did Five across The Face. The show
was amazing, we had over 300 people show up! After
that we played The Mr. LHS for our school and got
more fans. Sadly though, Boz left the band, without
hard feelings, we have yet to find a bass player,
but I think we can manage. After that, PHAT and
Super-J Records decided it was time to put our
first release, "Horn'z Aint Cool!", on CD. THE CD
COMPANY DICKED US OVER THOUGH! And we don't have
those CD's at this time:-( But good news! We have
decided to go back into the studio to record our new
songs for our new CD, "Rock On Lowell!" We are
playing March 2nd at the ATTIC, in west county,
and March 3rd, at a private party. Keep in touch!
