Hilaria

The ancient Romans celebrated the Festival of Hilaria, the "mother of the gods," each year on the Ides ( l5th day) of March. Part of the festival involved bringing offerings to the temple. When Christianity replaced the old pagan culture, legend has it that the Festival of Hilaria was adapted to fit the new church's needs and became known as Mother's Sunday in England.
